About the role:

The Exercise Physiologist is responsible for the delivery of culturally appropriate exercise physiology services to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, including chronic disease management, illness prevention and health promotion.

This position is required to develop comprehensive individual assessments and programs and group exercise interventions.

The Exercise Physiologist reports to the Manager, Allied Health and does not have any supervisory responsibilities.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide comprehensive assessments and deliver a high-quality Exercise Physiology service targeted towards members of the community who are at risk, including development of individual and group exercise interventions.
  • Provide physical activity advice and exercise programs for clients, including those with or at risk of developing chronic health conditions, assisting with exercise for weight loss and working with ante natal clients. Mobility assessments may also be required.
  • Coordinate and deliver cardiac and pulmonary fitness programs and advice for clients to maximise functional capacity and well-being.
  • Work with health workers to provide clients with comprehensive screening, assessment and treatment plan and follow-up monitoring to ensure the safety and appropriateness of exercise programs.
  • Explore, develop and implement opportunities for staff access to supervised exercise programs.
  • To encourage maximum independence of clients by demonstrating and supervising self-guided exercise and behavioural modification programs and the delivery of health promotion activities.
  • Participate in organisational and community activities to advance the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • Work within Wuchopperen’s Policies and Procedures including the Staff Code of Conduct and the Work Health and Safety requirements and contribute to continuous improvement processes to ensure compliance with relevant standards and safe, effective service delivery.

Core Capabilities:

For applicants to be successful in this role, they should demonstrate:

  1. Demonstrated ability and exercise in providing high-quality exercise physiology assessment, intervention and programs for clients within the context of a primary health care setting, together with the capacity to develop, implement and evaluate fitness programs.
  2. Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander societies and cultures from an historical and contemporary perspective, including the ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  3. High level understanding of chronic health conditions and cardiac and pulmonary fitness rehabilitation requirements.
  4. Extensively developed interpersonal and communication skills including the ability liaise and network with a range of stakeholders as well as effectively advocate for, and articulate the interests of, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals and families.
  5. Demonstrated ability to work independently with limited supervision, together with the ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment, prioritise and meet deadlines, deal with matters of a sensitive and confidential nature and meet organisational demands.
  6. Demonstrated ability to meet and work within the core values and behaviours of Wuchopperen.

Qualifications and experience:

  • A tertiary qualification in Exercise Physiology that meets the standards of Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) such as a degree course in Exercise Physiology, Human Movement or Health Science majoring in Exercise Science.
  • Accredited or eligibility for accreditation by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA)

Requirements:

  • The successful applicant must be eligible to apply for a Medicare Provider number.
  • Appointment to this position requires proof of qualification and registration or membership with the appropriate registration authority or association. Certified copies of the required information must be provided to the Human Resources team prior to the commencement of duties.
  • It is recommended for the employee to be vaccinated against COVID-19.
  • It is a condition of employment for this role for the employee to be, and remain, vaccinated against the following vaccine preventable diseases: measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A and Pertussis (whooping cough).
  • CPR and First Aid Certificate to be obtained within the first six weeks of employment.
  • Possession of a current Queensland “CA” class driver’s licence.
  • All employees are responsible for the safety of themselves, students, visitors, volunteers and fellow staff members. Employees must report any hazards or incidents, co-operate in emergency drills, undertake Workplace H&S training as required, and lodge risk assessments for all external and internal risk activities.
  • Ability to use Microsoft products and the ability to use or willingness to gain proficiency in the client information management systems.
  • It is a condition of employment that all employees are holders of a current and valid “blue card” or Working with Children Check. This is at your cost. Employment cannot continue or commence if you do not have a ‘blue card’ or if your ‘blue card’ is withdrawn or is disqualified.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to engage in ongoing professional development by participating in relevant courses and programs.
  • Commitment to work within the principals of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control including a willingness to develop the leadership of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander staff.
  • Proof of qualifications is required to be provided prior to the commencement of duty.
  • A commitment to adhere to Wuchopperen’s policies and procedures.
