Group Facilitator & Counsellor – Suicide Bereavement
StandBy Support After Suicide
Posted 8 hours ago
This isn’t just another counselling role. This is a chance to walk alongside people through some of life’s hardest moments—and help them feel less alone.
At Youturn, we believe deeply in the power of human connection. Through our StandBy Support After Suicide program—Australia’s leading national suicide postvention service—we support people and communities in the aftermath of suicide with compassion, understanding, and care that doesn’t come with a time limit.
You can find out more at www.youturn.org.au & www.standbysupport.com.au
We’re looking for a skilled and kind clinician who knows that healing doesn’t happen in a straight line. Someone who can hold space for complex emotions, offer calm in chaos, and help people find their footing again—at their own pace.
What this role is really about
You’ll be delivering one-on-one counselling and group support to individuals, families, and communities bereaved by suicide. But more than that, you’ll be a steady presence in moments of deep grief and disruption. You’ll:
Provide counselling that’s grounded in evidence, informed by trauma, and guided by empathy.
Facilitate support groups that offer connection, understanding, and gentle structure.
Conduct assessments that lead with care, not checklists—and build care plans that reflect each person’s unique experience.
Collaborate with other services and practitioners to ensure wraparound support.
Work flexibly—online and in person—to reach people wherever they are, literally and emotionally.
Contribute your voice to service improvement and innovation in a national program.
Who we’re looking for
You’re likely a psychologist, counsellor or social worker who’s walked beside people in grief, trauma or crisis before—and you get how layered, raw, and deeply human this work is.
You bring:
Tertiary qualifications in counselling, psychology, social work, or mental health, with professional registration (PACFA Clinical, ACA L4, AASW, or AHPRA).
At least 2 years of supervised counselling experience, ideally including suicide bereavement or postvention.
Confidence in trauma-informed and grief-informed practice, including risk assessment, safety planning, and crisis response.
Experience delivering counselling and group facilitation in a way that is person-led, culturally sensitive and emotionally attuned.
Strong digital literacy—you’re comfortable using telehealth and secure systems and supporting clients in hybrid service models.
A current driver’s licence and relevant clearances (WWCC, LCS check, etc.).
It’s a bonus if you’ve got postgraduate training in grief or bereavement, ASIST certification, or lived experience with suicide bereavement—but what matters most is how you show up, connect, and care.
What it’s like to work with us
At Youturn and StandBy, our culture is built on real relationships—not just between staff and clients, but between colleagues, teams and communities. We:
Care for each other, not just the work.
Trust our people to do what’s right and give them the tools and support to do it well.
Prioritise supervision, reflection, and learning—it’s essential in this work.
Celebrate diversity and create inclusive, safe spaces for staff and clients alike.
You’ll join a national team that’s respected for our leadership in suicide postvention, and a local team that’s warm, grounded, and passionate about making a difference.
