The role of Assistant Accountant is important and valued by us because it truly helps keep the business running. This role will be responsible for the daily accounting transactions that ensure all our financial transactions are properly recorded.
This role reports to the Finance Manager. Made for a self-starter, it is one of those roles with real advancement opportunities as we grow. There will be intentional mentoring provided to this role.
This is a hybrid role, which will allow 3-4 days per week WFH as well as requiring a minimum of 1 day per week in our Mascot distribution centre and/or our Alexandria office.
The Responsibilities
Manage daily financial transactions and maintain accurate financial records;
Collect and input credit card expenses, including managing employee expense claims;
Manage fixed asset registers and record acquisitions, disposals, and depreciation.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
Reconcile supplier invoices against purchase orders and received stock;
Communicate with suppliers to resolve discrepancies, manage credit notes, and apply discounts or specials;
Ensure inventory transactions are recorded correctly and that inventory is properly classified and valued;
Process and reconcile accounts payable, ensuring accurate and timely supplier payments;
Ensure all invoices are coded correctly to the Chart of Accounts and cost centres;
Manage accounts receivable, issue customer invoices, and follow up on outstanding debts.
Reconciliation & Compliance
Complete bank, credit card, and intercompany reconciliations;
Prepare and post journals for accruals, prepayments, and adjustments;
Support the preparation of GST reporting requirements;
Contribute to end-of-month and end-of-year close processes;
Ensure ledger accuracy by verifying balances and making corrections where needed;
Prepare supporting documentation for external audits or internal financial reviews.
Reporting & Forecasting
Assist in the preparation of monthly financial reports for internal stakeholders;
Support the budgeting and cash flow forecasting process with accurate inputs and analysis;
Contribute to ad hoc reporting tasks and financial analysis to support business decision-making;
Help maintain integrity in reporting systems and ensure data quality.
Projects & Collaboration
Support internal stakeholders and collaborate on cross-functional accounting projects;
Help maintain and update the Chart of Accounts and cost centre structure as needed.
Participate in finance system improvements;
Cross-train with other finance team members to provide backup during leave or busy periods;
Assist with continuous improvement initiatives across finance operations.
Requirements
Bachelor of Accounting or Equivalent;
3+ years working as an Assistant Accountant or equivalent (must be experienced in month end procedures);
CA/CPA qualified or working towards qualification;
Advanced experience with Xero;
Advanced Microsoft Excel (minimum of V-lookups and Pivot tables);
Sound understanding of accounting and finance regulatory requirements;
Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
Hybrid role will allow 3-4 days WFH, with 1 day minimum per week required in our Mascot distribution centre and some time in our Alexandria office;
Australian Permanent Resident or Citizen with the current right to work in Australia;
Would be great if experience with stock;
Would be great if experience in financial reporting and analysis and or modeling;
Would be great if experience in an e-commerce, distribution, or manufacturing business.
