The Prevention Division aims to reduce the risk of cancer in the Victorian population through social marketing, advocacy, professional education and providing advice based on the best available evidence. This involves action to affect individual behaviours and the broader physical and legislative environment to support health and wellbeing. Our programs include: SunSmart, Quit, Achievement Program, Screening, Early Detection and Immunisation (SEDI), and the Food for Health Alliance.

Saving lives and equitably improving cancer outcomes through screening, early detection and immunisation is a key goal for Cancer Council Victoria, with a focus on:

  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate initiatives to equitably eliminate cervical cancer
  • Advocate programs and initiatives that will address the growing burden of liver cancer
  • Develop, deliver, and evaluate campaigns and programs to drive participation in bowel screening
  • Advocate and deliver evidence-based initiatives that increase earlier detection of cancer
About your opportunity

We are seeking a Media and Communications Advisor – Cancer Screening to join the Prevention Division. Reporting to the Media and Communications Manager - SEDI your role is to:

  • Deliver impactful communications for vital health programs: You'll plan and coordinate media and communications activities for cancer screening, HPV immunisation, and liver cancer/viral hepatitis programs—contributing directly to early detection and prevention efforts across Victoria.
  • Drive stakeholder engagement and advocacy: From briefing spokespeople for media interviews to supporting advocacy priorities and growing digital audiences, this role is central to building strong relationships and amplifying Cancer Council Victoria’s prevention messages.
  • Engage and support priority communities: A core focus of this role is developing targeted communications for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTIQ communities, and culturally and linguistically diverse populations, helping ensure all Victorians have access to relevant, inclusive health information.
  • Develop strategic, multi-channel campaigns: You'll provide expert advice on the best communication channels—across digital, media, social, and health professional networks—and work with internal and external stakeholders to deliver well-coordinated, high-impact campaigns.
All about you

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is a skilled communicator with campaign expertise: You have a tertiary qualification in communications, public relations or a related field, along with experience planning and delivering integrated media and communications strategies across PR, digital, social media, and print.
  • Has a commitment to inclusive, community-centred communication: You have experience delivering health messages to priority communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, LGBTIQ communities, and people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
  • Has strong media relations and digital know-how: You understand how to manage media opportunities from briefing to execution, and are confident in leveraging digital platforms and social media strategy to engage and inform diverse audiences.
  • Is a collaborator and clear communicator: You’re skilled at building strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, and can convey complex information simply and clearly across a range of channels and audiences.
