About the Role
The ASAVI Research Team Leader will be responsible for overseeing the ASAVI Research project, ensuring efficient team supervision, logistical and clinical coordination, and comprehensive report writing. The role requires a dynamic team leader capable of guiding a diverse research team, managing resources, and maintaining high standards of research integrity and compliance.
The specific purpose of this position is to oversee the ASAVI Research Project in relation to clinical research activities in Strep A infection surveillance to support the vaccine
development activities of the Australian Strep A Vaccine Initiative (ASAVI). This role will be responsible for the management and coordination of the Perth Aboriginal Sore Throat Study and will have a key role in stakeholder liaison and management. This will be a Maximum term Full-time role which expires on 30 January 2026 (with possibility of extension).

SELECTION CRITERIA
Essential
- Aboriginal and or Torres Strait Islander pursuant to section 50D of the Equal Opportunity Act.
- A Diploma in AHP or degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. medicine, science, immunology, epidemiology, infectious disease, registered allied health, nursing or other clinical professional) or equivalent level of relevant experience.
- Relevant experience in clinical research and conducting research projects and clinical studies according to GCP.
- Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and the ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and culturally diverse populations.
- Demonstrated capacity to work with Aboriginal Health Service Providers and Aboriginal communities to understand and respond to their needs.
- Experience in research project management and completion of project deliverables on time and budget.
- Ability to engage with research collaborators and partners across multiple sites, and across multiple locations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; including demonstrated interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of infectious diseases, immunology, epidemiology; including Strep A, acute rheumatic fever, rheumatic heart disease (desirable).

About Derbarl Yerrigan Health Service
Princess Margaret Hospital held monthly clinics at the Aboriginal Advancement Council to provide immunisations and paediatric medical treatment. Princess Margaret Hospital supported the service as they recognised that our young Koolunga needed more follow up care. The monthly clinics increased from monthly to fortnightly and then weekly. Doctors and nurses from Princess Margaret Hospital also visited Allawah Grove Noongar Camp on the fringes of the metro area.
From this initial activity the seed was thus planted recognising that more health and medical support was desperately needed for all Aboriginal people not just the young. Princess Margaret Hospital should be recognised and acknowledged for the services they provided to Aboriginal families in the late 60's - early 70s.
The seed that was planted grew within the Noongar community and as a priority the next phase of the journey began. The word spread to the Noongar people and they formed the New Era Aboriginal Fellowship (NEAF) Committee - this Committee was inspirational in lobbying for contributions and community support to allow an independent, dedicated facility to be established where extended health care could be provided to those in need.
