The Oral Health service provides a range of oral health care services from IUIH and Member service clinics as well from a fully equipped mobile van, as required.

About the Role?

Our Dental Assistant Trainee will have the opportunity to undertake ‘on the job’ training and independent study towards completing a Certificate III in Dental Assisting across 12 months. The successful applicant will be able to develop skills and knowledge that enable you to undertake the role of a Dental Assistant.

Our Dental Assistant’s within our Oral Health team help to improve the oral health of the community through the delivery of quality dental treatment and support services. The role provides dental assistance (chair side) and dental administration as well as provide support to the oral health team in service delivery in designated primary clinic locations across the various regions in southeast Queensland as well as outreach services as required.

The ‘on the job’ training will require you to:

Undertake established procedures associated with chair-side assistance, including:

  • Surgery preparation.
  • Reception, preparation and discharge of patients.
  • Assistance at chair-side with instruments, materials and oral evacuation procedures including retraction.
  • Charting procedures.
  • Maintaining and upholding identified infection control procedures.
  • Instrument and equipment maintenance and sterilization procedures
  • Assisting with dental radiology

In addition, you will:

  • Accurately document client files with treatment and medication information
  • Perform administration duties as required within both a clinical environment and office environment
  • Work in ways which are ethically, culturally and respectfully propa; fostering integrity in our conduct and actions by matching our ways with the values of IUIH and The Ways Statement.
  • Uphold client confidentiality, ensuring their right to privacy with information only being shared where consents are provided

About You?

Essentials:

To perform this role it is essential that the incumbent is an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991.

  • Current C Class Drivers Licence (QLD)
  • Current Criminal History Check
  • Valid Blue Card
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certificate
  • Willing to commitment to undertake studies in Certificate III in Dental Assisting
  • Ability to work sensitively and effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, their leaders and health professionals, while respecting traditional culture, values and ways of doing business.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people within a health-related context with a clear understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture protocols and health policies
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively with people, particularly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Desirable, but not mandatory:

  • Previous experience working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and /or communities
