Shape National Policy. Represent an Industry That Keeps Australia Moving.
Are you a sharp policy thinker and natural relationship builder ready to step into a highly visible, hands-on role? This is a rare opportunity to join a national peak body at a time of transformation and make your mark on projects with real impact across rural and regional Australia.
Our client, the Australian Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA), is on the lookout for a Policy and Stakeholder Manager. Someone confident and capable who can represent the voice of their members, influence government, and lead initiatives that matter.
Why This Role is Different
This isn’t just another policy job. It’s a career-building move for someone ready to be at the table — not on the sidelines.
ALRTA is about to launch two flagship initiatives that you'll lead from the front: a new national accreditation program to lift industry standards, and a training package designed to build skills across rural transport operators. These are high-impact, high-visibility projects that need a steady hand and smart advocacy.
You’ll be the Executive Director’s 2IC, contributing directly to strategy and decision-making.
You’ll take the reins on the two above-mentioned, nationally significant projects.
You’ll occasionally travel to industry events and meetings across Australia, representing ALRTA with confidence and pride.
You’ll be a visible presence on the ground, forging relationships with members, state associations, sponsors, and government partners.
And in time, you’ll build your own team as the function grows — shaping it your way.
About ALRTA
The ALRTA is the national voice of rural, livestock and regional road transporters, advocating for the needs of family-owned and regional transport businesses across Australia. They work hand-in-hand with six independent state member associations and engage widely across industry, government, and community.
This role plays a critical part in delivering results and leading practical, credible policy work that reflects the realities of the people ALRTA represents.
This role is full- time and based in Canberra, working from the ATA building in the Parliamentary Triangle, a nationally significant location in the heart of the policy and advocacy landscape. Being co-located with the ATA provides opportunities for connection and collaboration within the wider transport policy community. While some flexibility for hybrid work is available, this role requires a regular presence in the office to stay connected and visible.
What You'll Be Doing
Developing and drafting practical, evidence-based policy to support industry priorities
Leading stakeholder engagement across government, sponsors, state member organisations and industry groups
Representing ALRTA publicly — including meetings in Canberra and occasional attendance at events
Driving project delivery for key initiatives including accreditation and industry training
Contribute to growing the organisation’s influence and capability through visible, consistent advocacy
Bringing fresh ideas to communications, sponsorship relationships, and long-term strategy
About You
You’ll thrive here if you’re someone who combines professionalism with a down-to-earth, respectful style. ALRTA's members are practical, passionate people — and this role requires someone who can meet that energy with clarity, calm, and a strong results focus.
Essential skills and traits:
Experience in policy, advocacy, or stakeholder roles
A confident communicator who can engage across sectors and political viewpoints
Self-motivated, independent, and comfortable working without day-to-day supervision
A strong understanding of regional Australia, preferably in transport, agriculture or logistics
Tertiary qualifications in policy, communications, marketing, or a related advocacy field
Bonus if you also bring:
Experience engaging with government or industry bodies
Familiarity with accreditation programs, sponsorships, or industry training
An interest in regional Australia, connecting with real people in real places
What’s On Offer
Competitive salary of $100k–$130k + super
The chance to be ALRTA’s visible representative nationwide
Leadership responsibility and future team-building opportunities
Some travel required to connect directly with stakeholders and attend key events
Flexible, purpose-driven work at the heart of a nationally significant industry
