Schedule: 5 days/week, approximately 40 hours (Flexibility required in accordance with variable vessel departure and return times, haul-out periods and emergency call-outs to vessels when in need).

About Whitsunday Adventure Maxis: Whitsunday Adventure Maxis is a premier sailing charter company operating in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Maintenance Manager/Boat Repairer to ensure our vessels and their tenders remain in top condition, providing safe and exceptional adventures for our guests.
Job Overview: As the Maintenance Manager/Boat Repairer, you will play a critical role in managing, maintaining, and repairing our fleet to ensure safety, compliance, and operational excellence. You will oversee all maintenance activities, coordinate repairs, and ensure our vessels meet stringent survey and legislative standards, including those set by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA). This hands-on role requires technical expertise, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work flexibly in a dynamic marine environment.
Key Responsibilities:
• Fleet Maintenance: Plan, conduct, and oversee routine maintenance and urgent breakdown repairs to keep the fleet in optimal working order.
• Compliance and Inspections: Schedule and manage inspections for fire systems, gas compliance, rigging, and other regulatory requirements to maintain AMSA survey standards.
• Slipping and Haul-Outs: Plan and execute slipping/haul-out periods, including large-scale repairs, modifications, and antifouling tasks.
• Workshop Management: Maintain an organised workshop, ensuring tools, equipment, and spare parts are in good condition and readily available.
• Inventory and Procurement: Order parts, spares, and stock, maintaining accurate records and managing budgets effectively.
• Crew Coordination: Educate and manage crew members on maintenance tasks to be performed during charters, ensuring vessels are maintained at sea.
• Liaison and Reporting: Communicate regularly with company directors and the operations manager to report issues, recommend solutions, and coordinate repair schedules.
• Tender Maintenance: Ensure all tenders are regularly serviced, operational, and compliant with safety standards.
• Vessel Operations Support: Assist with vessel movements between berths and anchorages, and provide operational support when required (e.g., during busy charter periods).
• Documentation: Maintain detailed records of maintenance tasks, schedules, inspections, and repairs for compliance and operational efficiency.
Skills and Experience Required:
• Technical Proficiency: ◦ Expert use of hand and power tools for marine repairs.
◦ Strong knowledge of 12/24v electrical systems, including wiring and troubleshooting.
◦ Experience in painting, coating applications, and marine product selection.
◦ Proficiency in fiberglassing for hull and structural repairs.
◦ Competence in outboard engine servicing and maintenance.
◦ Solid understanding of diesel engine mechanics and general marine mechanical systems.
• Fabrication Skills: Welding or fabrication experience is advantageous but not mandatory.
• Vessel Handling: Proven ability to handle and berth vessels safely in various conditions.
• Organisation: Exceptional planning and organisational skills to manage multiple maintenance schedules and priorities.
• Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose issues quickly and implement effective solutions under time constraints.
• Teamwork and Communication: Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate with crew, management, and external contractors.
Qualifications/Certificates:
• Marine Engineering: MED3 (Marine Engine Driver Grade 3) or MED2 (Marine Engine Driver Grade 2).
• Vessel Operations: Master <24m Near Coastal (or equivalent).
• Safety Training: Current First Aid and CPR certification.
• Local Knowledge: Familiarity with the Whitsunday marine industry, local suppliers, and regional regulations is highly advantageous.
Additional Requirements:
• Valid driver’s license (essential for travel between marina, workshop, and suppliers).
• Physically fit and comfortable working in confined spaces, at heights, or in challenging weather conditions typical of marine environments.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and occasional overtime during peak seasons or slipping periods.
• Be available and willing to operate as a relief skipper on charter when needed.
