About the Role
This is an exciting opportunity for both emerging and seasoned professionals to play a key role in media and public affairs within a high-profile government organisation. The Media Officer and Senior Media Officer positions are instrumental in enhancing public understanding of key initiatives, managing reputation, and supporting crisis communications. Reporting to a senior media leader, you will be part of a collaborative team driving the development of integrated media strategies and handling sensitive issues in alignment with public interest and organisational values.
This dual-level opportunity offers contract positions for both Media Officer (Grade 7) and Senior Media Officer (Grade 8). Sitting within a high-performing media team, these roles are integral to shaping public messaging, protecting organisational reputation, and driving engagement across traditional and digital channels.
The Media Officer role is ideal for a skilled communicator looking to gain exposure in a complex public sector environment, while the Senior Media Officer role is suited to professionals with experience leading proactive media strategies and managing high-stakes issues. Both positions support the delivery of communication initiatives that reflect government priorities and enhance public understanding of key programs and decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft and distribute media releases, briefing notes, and statements with appropriate approvals
- Provide strategic communication advice and messaging support to internal stakeholders
- Liaise with journalists and media outlets, responding to enquiries in a timely and accurate manner
- Monitor media coverage and identify emerging issues, risks, and opportunities
- Assist in developing integrated media and public relations campaigns across print, broadcast, and digital platforms
- Manage media responses during crisis or high-impact events in collaboration with senior leaders
- Create content for speeches, press events, and public-facing engagements for executives and ministers
- Maintain positive working relationships with media contacts, ministerial offices, and internal communications teams
- Coordinate logistics for press conferences and public events, ensuring alignment of messaging and presentation
- Support the team’s media monitoring services, providing relevant updates to leadership as needed
- Uphold organisational values and lead with integrity, collaboration, and a commitment to public service
About You
- Proven experience in media, journalism, public relations, or strategic communications
- Strong writing, editing, and messaging skills tailored to high-profile public audiences
- Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and manage sensitive or crisis communication
- Experience in government or large, complex organisations is highly desirable
- Knowledge of media operations and public sector communication frameworks in Australia
- Tertiary qualification in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related field
- For Senior Media Officer: experience managing media issues, campaigns, and stakeholder engagement at a senior level
- Excellent interpersonal and stakeholder management skills
- Flexibility to work outside standard hours when required
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, or related discipline
- Must hold valid Australian working rights (citizen, PR, or long-term work visa)
