RECEPTIONIST - AUSBEDS, MARRICKVILLE

Hi, I'm Karl, owner, operator at ausbeds. These job ads are so boring, so I'll tell you what I reckon I need in simple language and you can see if you want to do it.

What I do -

Buying a mattress really sucks, I figured out why, and now I made it so it doesn't suck anymore. I built a factory and a new system that solves all of the mattress problems. I make mattresses that are actually matched to people's bodyweight, are modular so they can be adjusted for people.

What I want you to do -

I need someone to be the first point of contact at ausbeds, both over the phone and in person at our Marrickville showroom. You'll be greeting customers who come to check out our mattresses, answering phone calls, responding to emails, stuff like that.

A big part of the job is understanding our customers' needs and connecting them with solutions. People call with all sorts of questions, from delivery times to mattress recommendations based on their bodyweight to warranty inquiries. Even if you were a mattress expert it wouldn't give you much of an advtangtage here because our system is completely different from any other mattress system. The only way to learn it is to work with it.

Here's what a typical customer interaction looks like (this is maybe 80% of the job):

1. Someone comes in the showroom - you greet them and show them how our system works

2. You give them some time, and when they ask for more help, you show them a few more things (we have all this worked out)

3. You ask if they'd like us to email a quote, or if they'd like to order (no pressure sales - some people don't even want a quote which is also ok)

4. If they want to buy, you handle the logistics - create an invoice, arrange delivery times, scheduling etc. This can be tricky, but some people are naturals at it

The main things to focus on first are -

People come to us because they're frustrated with the usual mattress shopping experience. They need some logical solutions, not sales spin. We have very logical solutions, we have processes that make sure people aren't left in the lurch. We take care of our customers at any stage.

So you'll need to understand our fitting process in order to help customers. We have customers that fully understand it before they come in to the shop. If this is the case, the right applicant will have a pretty good idea of how it works before they even start their first day.

We have specific processes for handling orders, scheduling deliveries, and tracking customer information. You'll need to pick these up fairly quickly.

Being able to handle a busy environment - sometimes it's quiet and you can relax, and sometimes the phone is ringing non-stop while customers are in the showroom. You need to be able to prioritize and stay calm.

Here's some reviews so you can see what customers think

Some things you may or may not like -

You'll be working with a small team. We're not a massive corporate setup.

The hours are actually pretty good! We start at 10am, and our showroom hours are Monday to Friday: 10am – 6pm, Saturday and Sunday: 10am – 2pm. You'd be working 2 days a week, thursday and friday, 10-6. Somebody will always be here that understands how everything works so the transition in shouldn't be too difficult.

There's nobody else to report to, no other partners or bosses which keeps things streamlined. It's a pretty calm environment. If you treat the customers right, then you'll be ok around here. It's all I really require.

Some things you'll probably like -

We start at 10am,

I'm building something different here. ausbeds isn't just another mattress shop - we're changing how mattresses are made and sold. You'll be part of that.

This isn't a high-pressure sales job. We don't do commissions or push people to buy. Our products actually solve real problems, so our approach is to educate and help, not hard sell. There's no tactics here, or well, that's a lie, the tatcic is, help people, they'll tell there friends we're good, their friends will come and so on.

There is a bonus structure for if you make it past 3 months. You make it past 3 months by turning up, and treating the customers well, and following processes.

The business is stable and growing, with no debt and profitable every year even without much marketing. There's room to grow within the company as we expand.

You'll learn a lot about how a manufacturing business works from the inside. If you're curious about how things are made and how businesses operate, you'll have first row seats.

What I need from you -

You're naturally friendly and enjoy talking to people

You're organized and can manage multiple tasks without getting flustered

You have good attention to detail when it comes to orders and customer information

You can communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing

You're comfortable with basic technology (email, spreadsheets, order systems)

You're reliable - when you say you'll do something, you do it

You actually care about doing a good job (this one's really important)

Experience in customer service or reception work is definitely a plus, but I care more about your attitude, willingness to learn, but most of all I care about you abililty to make our customers feel warm and cared for.

HOW TO APPLY

email me at [email protected], tell me about yourself, tell me what you think of my ad, tell me whatever you like, speak to me. If you leave me a cover letter, don't use ai it's boring. Just write me, conversate. I'd be very interested in hearing your story, karl.

(also if you want brownie points, I'm particularly interested in hearing about any customer service experiences that really tested you, how you handled them, and what you learned from them)
