KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

The Yunbenun Ranger position will be responsible for managing and coordinating the Yunbenun Ranger Unit. The Yunbenun Ranger position is required to:

1. Liaison and communication with Traditional Owner groups, government agencies (QPWS), public, community, media, tourist operators and others.

2. Respect Wulgurukaba cultural values.

3. Undertake training and actual management of weeds and fire, waterways, monitoring activities (water quality, vegetation, and species surveys) and undertake recordings of traditional knowledge and culturally significant sites that help improve and sustain natural resource and cultural heritage management on Magnetic Island.

4. Be involved in talking to the community and school children about the project, the importance of Caring for Country and natural resource management.

5. Actively promote and provide a good role model for the Yunbenun Ranger Program.

6. Comply with relevant Occupational Health & Safety legislation and departmental policies and guidelines relating to this position.

7. Promote a culturally safe and respectful work environment for women, guided by Wulgurukaba cultural protocols.

8. Support and encourage the involvement of women in land and sea management activities, knowledge sharing, and monitoring of culturally significant sites.

9. Recognise and respect the distinct cultural responsibilities and strengths that women bring to Caring for Country.

10. Assist in creating opportunities for mentoring and learning pathways for young women, including community and school engagement.

11. Collaborate with female Traditional Owners and Elders to ensure gender-specific cultural knowledge is acknowledged and protected.

12. Other activities as required.

This role actively contributes to ensuring the Yunbenun Ranger Program remains inclusive and representative of both men’s and women’s cultural and environmental responsibilities.

The successful candidate will be required to respect Wulgurukaba Traditional Owner protocols whilst working on any projects on both land and sea Country.
