Peats Soil & Garden Supplies is seeking a confident and capable Safety Officer to join our team at our Brinkley, SA site. This is a pivotal role where you’ll lead the charge in strengthening and maintaining our WHS and transport compliance systems, supporting our team across diverse and dynamic operations involving heavy machinery, plant, and unique organic processing methods.

In addition to traditional WHS responsibilities, this role also includes overseeing transport compliance, including permits, NHVR requirements, and audit readiness. You’ll be helping ensure both safety and legal compliance are built into our daily operations.

We need someone who’s hands-on, thinks outside the box, and can confidently lead cultural change while keeping us aligned with all relevant laws and regulations.

About the Role

You’ll manage and maintain WHS systems, review and update risk assessments, write clear and practical SOPs, and keep both the workshop and broader business in step with National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) expectations. This is a role for someone who can educate, influence, and hold people accountable—especially when there’s resistance to change.

We’re open to discussing flexible hours and work arrangements, depending on your skills, experience, and availability. It’s more important to us to find the right person than a strict 9-to-5.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee WHS systems and ensure compliance with legislation and standards

Review and update risk assessments and safe operating procedures (SOPs)

Conduct site audits, inspections, and lead incident investigations

Educate and support staff at all levels in understanding and adopting safe practices

Manage transport compliance, including permits, NHVR obligations, and audit preparation

Monitor and maintain accurate records for vehicle, driver, and chain of responsibility requirements

Collaborate with leadership to build and uphold a proactive safety culture

What You’ll Bring

Certificate IV or higher in Work Health and Safety (WHS)

Experience in a transport, industrial, or heavy machinery environment

Proven ability to manage WHS and transport compliance systems

Confident in preparing for and managing NHVR audits and documentation

Excellent communication and leadership skills

Strong documentation and problem-solving skills

Resilience and confidence to push initiatives through, even when met with resistance
