About the Role:
Be at the frontline of justice and support.
As a CNS Solicitor, you will provide on-call, 24/7 legal advice and welfare checks to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in police custody via the CNS phone line. This role is critical in safeguarding rights, ensuring wellbeing, and delivering culturally respectful, high-quality legal services — after hours, weekends, and public holidays included.
You’ll need energy, compassion, professional excellence, and a strong commitment to social justice.
Key Responsibilities:
🔹Deliver independent legal advice over the CNS phone line.
🔹Assess welfare risks and initiate duty of care notifications.
🔹Provide support and updates to families of people in custody.
🔹Maintain accurate records and compliance documentation.
🔹Collaborate closely with the CNS team and NAAJA legal staff.
🔹Stay updated on criminal law, procedures, and best practices.
What We’re Looking For:
🔹A strong understanding of the cultural and social needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
🔹Excellent communication skills to liaise effectively with clients and police.
🔹Knowledge of Northern Territory Criminal Law.
🔹Capacity to provide ethical, high-quality legal advice independently.
🔹Ability to work flexibly under pressure with minimal supervision.
Mandatory Requirements
✅Law degree and eligibility for a Northern Territory Practising Certificate.
✅Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from legal practice
✅Ability to obtain a Working with Children Clearance (Ochre Card)
