ABOUT THE ROLE
North Burnett Regional Council is seeking an Environmental Officer to support Environmental Compliance, Sustainability, and Conservation across the region. This role is responsible for conducting environmental compliance audits, monitoring and managing environmental offset sites, and ensuring adherence to relevant legislation and Council policies.

The Environmental Officer will investigate and enforce environmental regulations, conduct surveillance and mapping of native flora and fauna, and provide expert advice on cultural heritage, vegetation disturbance, and planning matters. This role also involves supporting waste management, public health initiatives, and vector control programs while collaborating with community groups, environmental experts, and government agencies to achieve positive environmental outcomes.

ABOUT YOU
To be successful in this role, you will be a highly motivated and detail-oriented environmental professional with experience in environmental compliance, conservation, and regulatory enforcement. You will have strong analytical and investigative skills, with the ability to conduct environmental audits, monitor compliance, and provide expert recommendations on environmental matters.

You will have well-developed communication and stakeholder engagement skills, enabling you to work collaboratively with community groups, environmental specialists, and government agencies. Your ability to interpret legislation, prepare detailed reports, and provide technical advice will be essential to this role. A strong commitment to sustainability, environmental protection, and public health initiatives will be highly regarded.

A current ‘C’ class driver’s licence and a Diploma/Certificate qualification in a related field, or demonstrated high-level compliance and enforcement experience, are required. Furthermore, a tertiary qualification in an environmental discipline is desirable – along with certifications in Soil Sampling, Pest Management and First Aid.

Key Responsibilities will include:

Investigate, enforce and provide advice, reports and briefs relating to environmental offences and related matters.

Perform necessary environmental compliance audits at Council managed facilities and/or projects.

Monitoring and management of environmental off-set site as per legislation and Development Applications.

Surveillance, mapping, monitoring, management and reporting on native fauna and flora.

Identify and monitoring mapped sites of significance and cultural heritage.

Provide advice and recommendations relating to cultural heritage and vegetation disturbance.

Work collaboratively with community groups, environmental experts and State Departments.

Provide environmental advice in relation to planning and Development Applications.

Provide support in the areas of waste management and public health.

Undertake vector management control, trapping, inspections and education.

Assist in devising and implementing waste, health and natural environment plans and strategies.

Conduct covert surveillance at sites where environmental breach is suspected (via camera).

Prepare correspondence, reports, notices, infringements and other Statutory Instruments under relevant legislation including preparing reports as necessary

Provide high quality customer service with specialist advice, analysis and technical assistance to internal and external stakeholders.

Knowledge of soil properties/water quality and laboratory testing procedures and terminology as it relates to environmental practices.

Maintain and update the Contaminated Land Register and field enquiries relating to the matter.

Assist in the development, enforcement and evacuation of Council environmental policies, programs and strategies to improve environmental outcomes and oversea the implementation and monitoring of environmental relevant legislation.

The Council came into existence on the 15 March, 2008 following the Queensland local government reform process which resulted in the amalgamation of 6 Shires – Monto, Eidsvold, Mundubbera, Gayndah, Perry and Biggenden , into the new North Burnett Regional Council.
