As a Research Assistant, you will play a crucial role in our laboratory operations. You will conduct research and ICP and standard electrochemical analyses to support projects and product development initiatives. Qualifications & experience
Not negotiable - Right to work in Australia without sponsorship
Education: Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or an immediately related field.
Electrochemical Expertise: Experience with Electrodialysis will be highly regarded. Knowledge of techniques such as galvanostatic/amperometric methods, linear sweep voltammetry, cyclic voltammetry, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy.
Laboratory Experience: Prior experience in research and development or an academic/industrial laboratory.
Instrumentation Skills: Hands-on experience with analytical instruments including ICP-MS/OES, IC, titrators, and general wet chemistry tools.
Analytical Skills: Strong attention to detail and critical thinking for data interpretation.
Team and Independent Work: Ability to collaborate effectively while also managing tasks independently.
Organisational Abilities: Excellent time management and ability to prioritise tasks.
Data Analysis Proficiency: Comfortable using software for data analysis and reporting.
Safety Awareness: Thorough understanding of occupational health and safety (OHS) standards and laboratory best practices.
Communication: Clear and effective written and verbal communication skills.
Tasks & responsibilities
Experimental Research on Direct Lithium Extraction and Electrochemical Technology
Electrochemical test operating of a potentiostat to carry out DC and AC tests including cycling voltammetry and EIS.
Conduct hands-on experiments with electrochemical systems including electrodialysis and diffusion dialysis cells.
Design experiments, set up systems, monitor operations, collect samples, troubleshoot, and perform safe system shutdowns.
Perform chemical analysis using ICP-MS and/or -OES techniques and apply electrochemical methods for system characterisation and process optimization.
Data Collection, Analysis, and Reporting
Perform quantitative analysis using ICP-MS/OES, ion chromatography (IC), and other material characterisation tools and techniques.
Use computational tools (e.g., Python or similar) for data management, statistical analysis, and visualisation of large datasets.
Analyse data and generate reports and visualizations for team presentations and project documentation.
Laboratory Maintenance and Equipment Management
Ensure proper operation, maintenance, and calibration of laboratory instruments and equipment.
Manage inventory of consumables and laboratory supplies, placing orders as needed.
Sample and Solution Preparation
Prepare chemical solutions, reagents, and experimental samples in accordance with protocols.
Protocol Adherence and Safety Compliance
Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and maintain strict compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
Documentation and Record-Keeping
Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks, experimental records, and data logs.
Collaboration and Troubleshooting
Work closely with multidisciplinary teams to troubleshoot experiments and improve methodologies.
Support the development and refinement of new protocols and standard practices.
General Laboratory Management
Maintain a clean and organised laboratory environment.
Conduct regular calibration, maintenance checks, and ensure readiness of all lab equipment.
Operation of ICP-MS and/or ICP-OES instrumentation - Perform routine ICP analyses on various samples following established protocols and procedures.
Prepare samples for analysis, including sample digestion and dilution as necessary.
Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring accuracy and reliability of analytical results.
Document and record experimental procedures, observations, and results accurately and meticulously.
Assist in the development and optimisation of analytical methods for ICP analysis.
Assist in the development, standardisation, and de-bottlenecking of testing activities.

Note - the role is not flexible and requires attending in person the ElectraLith laboratory at Monash University, Clayton Campus. Hours worked to be between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday to Friday.
