About the opportunity

We are seeking to appoint a Technical Officer to support an extensive research program at the Australian Maritime College’s (AMC) world-leading hydrodynamics laboratory which is a crucial sovereign capability in maritime engineering. The successful candidate will support the Cavitation Research Laboratory (CRL) team at the Centre for Maritime Engineering & Hydrodynamics (CMEH) in completing its research and learning objectives. The position is funded by Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Maritime Division and is based at the CRL located at the AMC campus in Newnham.

What you’ll do:

  • Perform high-level numerically controlled programming/simulation and manufacturing using a subtractive 5 axis machine centre
  • Assess, analyse, repair, replace deficiencies to make improvements to complex equipment.
  • Develop new equipment/components and their accessories to required specifications in a timely manner enabling successful completion of research programs.
  • Work with a substantial degree of initiative & autonomy with guidance from Line Manager and CRL team.

What we’re looking for:

  • Hold suitable trade or professional qualifications (for example, but not limited to, mechanical fitter and turner, machinist, toolmaker, etc.) with relevant technical experience (>5 years)
  • Demonstrate experience in computer numerically controlled subtractive programming, simulation and operation and other manufacturing methods
  • Ability to physically assemble complex precision equipment
  • Experience in diagnostics, fault finding and problem solving
  • Ability to work within a technical team to deliver against agreed targets and objectives
  • Experience in the operation & maintenance of fluid systems.
  • Ability to eliminate or minimise risk.

Qualifications and Licences:

  • Forklift licence will be required.
  • Confined Space training will be required.
  • Working at Heights training will be required.
  • First Aid and Advanced Resuscitation certificate will be required.
  • Working with Vulnerable people registration.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 6 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $113,029 comprising base salary within the range of $89,091 to $96,606 plus 17% superannuation.
