About This Opportunity

We are seeking a highly experienced and passionate Equine Internal Medicine Specialist to join our Veterinary Teaching Hospital and contribute to the education of future veterinarians and veterinary technologists. This role involves providing high-quality, relationship-centred care to equine patients at the Equine Specialist Hospital on the Gatton Campus, managing referral cases, and supporting interdisciplinary care. The specialist will also teach and mentor undergraduate and postgraduate veterinary students, as well as train interns and residents.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Provide high quality care to equine patients and clients, and independently manage both routine and difficult veterinary cases
  • Provide mentoring and clinical leadership to junior staff in managing difficult or complex clinical cases
  • Continue to develop expertise in equine internal medicine and veterinary practice
  • Identify and contribute to opportunities for improvement within the hospital
  • Provide an excellent clinical role model for students and colleagues
  • Provide clinical expertise to the teaching of undergraduate & postgraduate students, interns and residents
  • Actively contribute to the daily management and operations of the service
  • Provides expertise to clinical teaching
  • Actively promote and foster the School's relations with industry, government departments, professional bodies and the wider community.

As a 24-hour operation, your take-home salary will be dependent on your specific roster, including loadings of 50% for weekend shifts, 25% for night shifts, and 15% for afternoon shifts.

Afternoon shifts are shifts commencing at or after midday and finishing at or before midnight, Night Shift are shifts extending beyond midnight and finishing at or before 6AM. The Veterinary Teaching Hospital is an organisational unit within the School that includes all of the School's outstanding clinical facilities. UQ VETS Equine Hospital is largely referral-based hospital with advanced facilities and offers a 24-hour emergency medical and surgical service. UQ VETS Small Animal Hospital boasts the latest in veterinary medical and surgical diagnostic and treatment options for small animals, birds, exotic pets and wildlife, as well as a 7-day urgent and emergency Care service. The UQ VETS Clinical Studies Centre facilitates and provides support to pre-clinical and clinical training in companion animals as well as a renowned research hub for clinical and behavioural research. The Centre includes a 16 - table surgical teaching facility and is also used for veterinary continuing education events. The Clinical Studies Centre is also home to the School's Pets-for-Life Adoption Program. UQ staff also supervise clinical placements at the RSPCA's Brisbane Animal Care Campus, Wacol.

About You

  • A Bachelor of Veterinary Science or equivalent, registrable in Queensland.
  • Specialist registration in Queensland or experience of more than 10 years in the area of Equine Internal Medicine including experience in leading and managing clinical teams.
  • Commitment and enthusiasm for the education of Veterinary Science and Veterinary Technology students.
  • Capacity to serve as an excellent clinical role model.
  • An understanding and knowledge of veterinary health and safety requirements.
  • Ability to establish effective professional relationships and to represent the School of Veterinary Science to the university and wider community, including industry, government and professional bodies.
  • Demonstrated effective interpersonal, teamwork, negotiation and consultation skills and formal written and oral communication skills.

The successful candidate may be required to complete a number of pre-employment checks, including: right to work in Australia, criminal check, education check, AHPRA registration, mandatory immunisations, first aid and/or CPR certification, blue card check, etc.
