Townsville Catholic Education supports a diverse region extending from Townsville to the Burdekin and Whitsunday regions in the South, North to Ingham and Halifax, South-West to Winton, and West to the border with the Northern Territory, encompassing Mount Isa and several small, isolated western towns and east to Palm Island.

About the Role

Townsville Catholic Education (TCE) is currently seeking an experienced and committed Payroll Specialist and Payroll Projects Lead. This position is a full time, permanent position commencing 21 April 2025.

Working autonomously, the Payroll Specialist and Payroll Projects Lead plays a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and compliance of payroll transactions, with a primary focus on assessing and rectifying historical payroll discrepancies. This role involves providing expert payroll advice, resolving historical payroll queries, and ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, awards, and agreements. The Payroll Specialist will work closely with internal teams such as People and Safety and the Diocesan Office, and external stakeholders to investigate discrepancies, recommend improvements, and support the payroll rectification process.

Key Accountabilities

Provide Payroll Expertise: Offer expert advice on payroll-related matters, focusing initially on resolving historical payroll queries while ensuring compliance with applicable awards, agreements, legislation, and policies.

Accurate and Timely Calculations: Deliver precise and timely payroll calculations, ensuring the finalisation and resolution of payments in collaboration with relevant stakeholders.

Maintain Comprehensive Records: Keep detailed records of claims, calculations, and communications, ensuring adherence to audit and regulatory requirements.

Investigate and Resolve Discrepancies: Identify and resolve discrepancies in historical payroll records, implementing corrective measures and ensuring prompt resolution of errors.

Data Analysis for Rectification: Analyse historical payroll transactions as part of the Payroll Rectification Project, identifying issues and supporting necessary corrections.

Provide Informed Advice and Recommendations: Offer insights and recommendations to guide data-driven decision-making processes within payroll operations.

Support Payroll Coordinator: Assist the Payroll Coordinator in end-to-end payroll administration to ensure compliant payroll outcomes within a large, complex organisation.

Drive Continuous Improvement: Collaborate with the Payroll Coordinator to identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives in payroll processes.

Maintain Confidentiality and Sensitivity: Ensure all interactions are handled with the highest level of confidentiality, sensitivity, and empathy, respecting employee privacy and concerns.

Foster Stakeholder Relationships: Build and sustain strong working relationships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate effective payroll operations.

About You

Extensive experience working in the payroll field, including data analysis and review of payroll transactions

Multifaceted complex payroll experience adhering to multiple industrial agreements and awards

Ability to manage multiple concurrent programs of work, ensure deadlines are met - working collaboratively and always engaging the right stakeholders

Proven experience in identifying and implementing solutions to complex payroll problems.

Mandatory Criteria

Current Driver’s Licence

Tertiary qualifications in Finance, Commerce, Accounting or Economics or equivalent experience.

Ability to travel from time to time within the Catholic Diocese of Townsville

Ability to perform the physical requirements of the role in a safe manner.
