The Climate Change Authority is Australia’s independent climate advisory agency. We are seeking a skilled and proactive Media and Public Affairs Senior Advisor at the Executive Level 1 (EL1) classification to support the delivery of high-quality media and public communications. This role is focused on implementing agreed media strategies, drafting and coordinating media materials, and supporting the efficient day-to-day operation of the Authority’s Media and Public Affairs Team.

You will work closely with colleagues across branches and teams to support the Authority’s media and public engagement. You will play a key role in monitoring media activity, preparing public-facing communications products, and supporting the team’s administrative and reporting functions.

This role is well-suited to a communications professional with strong writing and coordination skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

The key duties of the position

Deliver timely and accurate media products, including media releases, talking points, Q&As, media briefings, and reactive statements.

Coordinate internal review and clearance processes for media and other public-facing materials including the Authority’s weekly news digest, working closely with the Manager – Media and Public Affairs, and policy and executive teams.

Support the implementation of agreed media strategies, ensuring alignment with Authority communications and strategic priorities.

Draft and contribute to speeches, op-eds, and media responses under tight deadlines.

Monitor media coverage and provide summaries, analysis, and media scans to internal stakeholders.

Support media engagement logistics, including coordinating interview briefs, liaising with media outlets, and arranging spokespeople.

Contribute to the preparation of team reporting, dashboards, and briefing packs.

Assist with administrative and coordination tasks for the media team, including tracking requests, managing inboxes, and updating records.

Maintain productive relationships with internal stakeholders and counterparts in other Australian Government agencies.

The ideal candidate will have:

strong experience in media, public affairs, journalism or strategic communications – ideally within or closely connected to government.

excellent writing skills and the ability to produce high-quality content tailored to different audiences and channels.

a collaborative and delivery-focused mindset, with a proven ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.

high attention to detail and sound judgement, particularly when dealing with sensitive or time-critical issues.

strong organisational skills, with experience in supporting team processes and reporting requirements.

a good understanding of government operations, media cycles, and stakeholder engagement.

Eligibility

Qualifications in communications, journalism, marketing, public policy or another relevant field will be highly regarded.

Australian citizenship is required.

The successful applicant will be required to obtain and maintain a Baseline security clearance.

How to apply

You are required to submit a 500-word pitch explaining how your skills, knowledge and experience will be relevant to the role and why you are the best candidate for the position.
We recommend considering the APS Work Level Standards when preparing your application.

Your application should include your current CV, including the names and contact details for two referees (CVs must be in .doc, .docx, or .pdf format).

Applications close Monday 28 April 2025, 11:59pm AEDT and should be submitted to [email protected].
Late applications after this closing date will not be accepted.

Please note this is a non-ongoing position for an initial period of 6 months, with the possibility of extension. Flexible working arrangements, including work from home, are available subject to operational requirements.
