Join the Vaccine Challenges team within the Tropical Diseases research group, where we're dedicated to tackling diseases caused by Streptococcus pyogenes (Strep A). Our multidisciplinary approach combines both laboratory and clinical research to develop new diagnostic, treatment, and control strategies. We're also focused on deepening our understanding of Strep A's immunology and epidemiology, especially its impact in Australia and developing countries. In collaboration with national and international partners, the team is working towards developing a global Strep A vaccine.
This role includes in-depth microbiological and immunological research and will be under the guidance of the Vaccine Challenges Team Leader, Lab Lead, and Senior Project Coordinator. You'll receive hands-on training and work closely with the Tropical Diseases laboratory team to drive forward innovative lab-based research. Key projects include developing and using a controlled human infection model for Strep A pharyngitis, and using this and other clinical samples to investigate vaccine- and infection-induced immunity (both systemic and mucosal) against Strep A.
Your responsibilities may include:
- Human infection clinical trials: preparation of bacterial challenge doses according to good laboratory practices, processing and storing of human biospecimens
- Immunology: enzyme-linked immunoassays, multiplex antibody and cytokine serology, functional assays and immunophenotyping
- Molecular biology: Nucleic acid extractions and qPCR, transcriptomics of human tissue and bacteria during infection
- Microbiology: Culture of Strep A from human biospecimens
- Tissue culture, aseptic technique, microbiological culture
- Assist and contributes to data generation and results analyses for dissemination in publications, presentations
- Meticulous data entry, continuous maintenance of neat and orderly records, online lab books and data storage
- Ordering and maintaining laboratory supplies
What we need from you:
- Honours or Masters qualification in Biomedical or Biological Sciences or related discipline
- Preferred experience in laboratory-based research, in particular immunology, molecular biology and/or microbiology techniques and a willingness to learn
- Demonstrated capacity to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment and adaptable to suit the needs of the project
- Demonstrated experience in working in an environment where high attention to detail and corresponding recording/reporting is essential
- Excellent time management, organisational and analytical problem-solving skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
