We're currently seeking a Tug Engineer to join a newly established crew supporting operations at Fleet Base West on Garden Island. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team providing vital harbour towage services to the Royal Australian Navy at one of the country's most strategically important naval bases.

This is a 75% part-time position without a fixed roster. Flexibility is essential - you'll need to be available throughout the year for at least 136 working days. In return, you'll receive a fortnightly salary based on a 75% pro-rata arrangement, with additional rates applied for days worked beyond the 136-day threshold.

The current full-time equivalent salary for a Tug Engineer at Fleet Base West is $223,787 per annum. To provide flexibility, you can choose between two leave options: five days off per month with one 30-day block per year, or seven days off per month without block leave.

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Port Manager and the Tug Master onboard the vessel, your responsibilities will include:

  • Maintain operational standards of all machinery, including deck and engine
  • Conduct maintenance and repair of marine plant and equipment
  • Prepare maintenance and operational reports as required
  • Report operational defects in a timely manner
  • Ensure compliance with policies, procedures, and statutory obligations
  • Participate in safety, skills, and competency training
  • Assist other crew members on deck as needed
  • Undertake duty at dockings, including monitoring and supervising other personnel
  • Monitor and review relevant work health and safety standards and procedures
  • Participate in operational improvement exercises and environmental compliance

What You Will Need To Succeed

To thrive this position, you will demonstrate:

  • A minimum Engineer Class 3 Near Coastal Certificate of Competency or higher
  • Current statements of attainment in Provide First Aid and Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • A current AMSA Medical applicable to your Certificate of Competency
  • A valid MSIC or 'Job Ready' MSIC Application (or proof of ability to obtain)
  • Prior experience in towage o tugs operations is highly advantageous to quickly adapt and contribute to safe and efficient operations.
  • Motivation towards safe workplace behaviours, practices and compliance.
  • Willingness to collaborate effectively with team members, through clear communication, mutual respect, and support.
  • A calm and focused composure during high-pressure situations and emergencies.
  • Excellent communication skills in both verbal and written
  • Demonstrate resilience and problem-solving skills to handle unexpected challenges.
  • The right to live and work in Australia
