Workplace Health and Safety Manager

Location: Southeast Melbourne

Employment Type: Full-Time, Fixed Term

Whelans Group is seeking a dedicated Workplace Health and Safety Manager to lead our safety initiatives and ensure compliance across our projects.

About the Role

Reporting directly to the Project Manager, the Workplace Health and Safety Manager will be responsible for ensuring all company activities align with Whelans Group’s policy requirements, national standards, and client expectations. This role plays a vital part in managing safety compliance, fostering stakeholder engagement, and overseeing the implementation of industry-leading safety practices. As a trusted advisor, you’ll lead risk management efforts, provide regular reporting, and uphold safety as a core value in all operations.

Key Responsibilities

Promote safety as a key principle across all projects.

Cultivate a proactive safety culture among employees and contractors.

Conduct training programs and enforce compliance with safety standards.

Conduct risk assessments in line with AS/NZS/ISO 31000 standards.

Implement hazard controls and prestart safety analyses.

Maintain and update safety management plans and tools.

Collaborate with project teams, field workers, and external stakeholders to address safety concerns.

Raise awareness of health and safety risks and measures.

Oversee onsite safety inductions, toolbox meetings, and inspections.

Ensure compliance with PPE and site safety protocols.

Ensure adherence to WHS laws, HVNL requirements, and VicRoads specifications.

Provide regular written reports, memos, and KPI reviews to management.

Support system development and staff training initiatives.

Maintain accreditation for WHS management systems and certifications.

Key Selection Criteria

Expertise in workplace health and safety management and risk assessment, including a minimum of five years' experience in a similar role.

Strong leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.

Proven ability to implement and monitor safety systems and training programs.

Analytical and organisational skills for effective reporting and compliance.

Technical knowledge of safety laws, standards, and practical applications.
