Whelans Group is looking for a talented and driven Project Engineer - Utilities to join our Major Projects team. This is a fantastic opportunity to play a key role in delivering innovative utilities infrastructure solutions.

About the Role

This role is a critical part of the Major Projects team, focusing on the successful design, planning, and execution of utilities projects, including water, sewer, communication, stormwater, and power systems. Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, the Project Engineer works to drive progress, solve challenges, and deliver high-quality outcomes while meeting Whelans Group's standards and client specifications

Key Responsibilities

As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for:

Cost Management: Monitor budgets, prepare accruals, and track production rates to ensure effective cost control

Commercial Operations: Oversee subcontractor claims, raise variations, and manage daily records.

Procurement: Draft scopes of work and arrange subcontractor meetings.

Construction Oversight: Develop construction methodologies and coordinate sequencing with teams to achieve program targets.

Quality Assurance: Ensure timely compliance with project quality requirements, RFIs, and NCR closures.

Safety Management: Uphold safety culture on-site, ensuring SWMS and permits are in place.

Environmental Compliance: Ensure documentation and controls for environmental compliance.

Leadership: Mentor site engineers and supervisors, fostering a culture of accountability and creativity.

Required Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.

Experience: Minimum 3 years in civil engineering, with utilities experience essential.

Skills: Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and GIS, strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.

Licences & Certification: Current Driver’s Licence, Construction Induction Card

Key Selection Criteria

Minimum BSc Degree in Civil Engineering

Minimum 5 years’ experience in utilities

Passion for people and their safety

Demonstrated communication skills – verbal and written

High level decision making and problem-solving skills

Onboarding Requirements

Applicants must complete:

Current Pre Employment Medical Check

Drug and Alcohol Test

Police Check (less than 12 months old)

VicRoads Full Driving History Report
