About the Role

A leading technology organisation is looking for an experienced Embedded Software Team Lead to join its Sydney-based team. This leadership role is perfect for someone passionate about cutting-edge embedded systems and eager to guide a team developing world-class Linux-based sensor technology.

In this position, you’ll be responsible for managing, mentoring, and growing a team of skilled Embedded Software Engineers. You’ll oversee the development of sophisticated software for deployed devices, ensuring high performance, reliability, and seamless integration with other key technologies such as RF detection, AI/ML, Data Science, and infrastructure systems.

This is an opportunity to take ownership, influence software architecture, and shape the next generation of embedded solutions in a fast-paced, growing market.

Key Responsibilities
•Lead and mentor a team of Embedded Engineers, fostering technical excellence and professional growth.
•Oversee software architecture, ensuring designs are efficient, scalable, and reliable in embedded, resource-constrained environments.
•Drive the full software development lifecycle—from requirement gathering, design, implementation, through to debugging and production support.
•Develop and maintain APIs for smooth integration with internal systems and third-party components.
•Champion best practices in software testing, validation, and quality assurance.
•Maintain clear, thorough documentation of software processes, architectures, and systems.
•Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (RF, AI/ML, Data Science, Operations) to meet both technical and business objectives.
•Facilitate Agile development practices, including sprint planning, stand-ups, backlog grooming, and retrospectives.
•Handle team management tasks such as recruitment, one-on-one coaching, performance reviews, and professional development planning.

Skills & Experience

Essential:
•Degree qualified in Computer Science, Mechatronics, Electronics Engineering, or related technical field—or equivalent industry experience.
•Minimum 5 years’ experience in embedded software development, with roles such as:
•Embedded Linux Engineer
•Software Engineer for hardware products
•Developer of network-connected devices/tools
• At least 2 years’ experience leading engineering teams.
• Comfortable working in a Linux-first command-line environment.
•Proficient in Python, Golang, or Modern C++ (proficiency in at least two languages preferred).
•Experience developing applications with key cross-cutting concerns (e.g., logging, security, configuration, persistence).
•Strong knowledge of communication protocols like gRPC, REST, raw TCP/UDP, or other high-performance messaging systems.
•Familiarity with development tools including Git, Jira, Confluence, and CI/CD pipelines.

Desirable:
•Experience designing system and software architecture.
•Knowledge of microservice architectures.
•API versioning and documentation best practices.
•Exposure to hardware-in-the-loop testing and CI/CD for embedded environments.
•Experience with embedded build systems.

Why Apply?
•Join a dynamic, innovative team at the forefront of embedded defence technology.
•Take ownership of projects and shape software architecture.
•Lead and mentor a talented, collaborative engineering team.
•Work across a broad technology stack including RF, AI, and data systems.
•Be part of a rapidly growing organisation with opportunities for career growth.

If you’re an experienced embedded software professional ready to lead a high-performing team and work on cutting-edge technologies, we encourage you to apply today. Or you can email me at [email protected]
