Description
Oversee Council’s governance portfolio and provide professional advice to internal and external stakeholders.

About this role

Covering a 12 month period of parental leave, and commencing on 30 June 2025, our Acting Manager, Governance will report directly to the Director, Corporate Services and will be a hard-working, highly organised professional who instigates and maintains effective relationships and has great attention to detail.

Responsibilities include:

  • The development, implementation and management of Council’s governance and policy framework to ensure legislative compliance.
  • Providing professional advice to staff and Council Members on legislation, policies and procedures to support effective and informed decision making to ensure governance/political awareness and best practice.
  • Management of Council registers and all associated reviews, e.g. confidential items, delegations etc.
  • Leading the timely preparation, finalisation and distribution of all Council and Committee meeting agendas and minutes. This role will be the primary contact for all Council agenda-related and governance enquiries, will be expected to provide meeting procedure advice to the Mayor/Chairperson, and will act as support for the minute taker at all meetings.
  • Undertaking regular monitoring and reporting to the Council and Executive Management Team on the status of actions arising from Council and Committee resolutions.
  • Providing professional advice and assistance to the Director, Corporate Services in the delivery of strategic governance projects across Council.
  • Oversee, provide general direction to, and management of, both Council’s property and WHS/risk portfolios.

Who we are looking for:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Law, Business or similar field, or demonstrated equivalent skills and experience in a similar role.
  • Understanding of good governance and how it is applied within the Local Government sector.
  • An understanding of legislation, regulations and statutory requirements of Local Government, in particular the Local Government Act 1999 (or a willingness to quickly learn and adapt).
  • Sound knowledge of the fundamentals and protocols associated with the administration and organisation of meetings.
  • Strong communication skills, in particular, providing information and recording and relaying messages, and an ability to multi-task and work under pressure.
  • Highly developed organisational skills, including time management and prioritisation, with great attention to detail. Exercising initiative, political awareness and professionalism at all times will also be crucial in succeeding in this role.
