About us

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention, preparedness, and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments, as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response, including road crash rescue, bushfire, hazardous material, technical and vertical rescue, severe weather incidents, remote and swiftwater rescue, and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.

The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR), Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ), as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt, prevent, mitigate, and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.

Purpose of the role

Community Engagement provides communities with appropriate opportunities to understand and manage risk, enabling them to be better prepared in an emergency. The team manages and coordinates statewide community programs, such as Fire Ed; Bushfire Ed; Fight Fire Fascination; Prepare. Act. Survive; Road, Attitudes and Action Planning (RAAP); SafeHome; SafeSpace; and StormSafe, and supports regions in undertaking community engagement activities, through the Regional Community Engagement Officers to enhance community resilience through increased awareness and preparedness initiatives for fire, emergency, and disaster events.

Reporting to the Manager, Community Engagement, you will be a key member of the team, contributing to the functions of stakeholder and community consultation and communication, and delivery of community safety education and awareness initiatives and programs. You will work closely with key stakeholders to provide coordinated administrative and logistics support for the delivery of the RAAP program. You will set priorities and monitor workflows to manage the functions of human resource, finance and travel administration, including consultation with stakeholder groups to ensure effective delivery of service.

  • Possess high-level competence and understanding of a variety of software applications (i.e. SAP, GPEV or other financial/procurement management systems) and web-based platforms i.e. Microsoft 365 (Teams, SharePoint, Office).
  • Experience with provision of administrative support in a project/program or community service environment.
Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department, in supporting frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work, including, but not limited to:

  • Provide administrative and program support, including maintaining document management systems, digital filing and tracking of records through SharePoint web management or other storage systems.
  • Assist in performing day-to-day project and community engagement tasks including updating internal and external communication channels, monitoring and providing status updates, and maintaining logs and communications to resolve issues and deliver practical solutions.
  • Coordinate administrative activities including human resource management, finance, procurement, reporting and logistics management, travel and accommodation bookings to assist in the end-to-end process for program deliverables.
  • Provide highly professional customer and community focused services and act as a point of contact for applicable local agencies (schools and community groups) to coordinate and manage enquiries for road safety education and awareness programs.
  • Identify, liaise and coordinate applicably trained QFD personnel to deliver presentation and awareness sessions to ensure quality support services are achieved in compliance with departmental policy and procedures.
  • Liaise and maintain productive working relationships with internal and external stakeholders relating to various program initiatives to ensure consideration of issues and delivery of positive outcomes.
  • Assist with preparing content briefs for collateral, organising and coordinating stakeholder information packs and support community events to raise awareness and build social license for QFD programs and initiatives.
  • Work under limited supervision using a high level of initiative to resolve issues, deliver practical solutions and disseminate information which supports business outcomes.
