The Shire of Manjimup is seeking applications for an innovative and energetic individual with relevant qualifications and experience in Building Surveying.

Building Surveyor

Full-Time, $89,565 - $96,149 per annum (plus entitlements, dependent on experience)

This role is responsible for assisting with the provision of services that ensure that Council’s statutory obligations to administer building provisions in the Shire are met.

This role includes:

  • Ensuring building including plans and construction within the Shire complies with the building code of Australia, all other statutory requirements and Council policies for the maintenance of sound building practices in the Shire.
  • Seeking qualified third-party advice for large third-party commercial buildings.
  • Providing proactive assistance to builders, architects, engineers and developers, and consult with Shire staff and public authorities regarding the construction and maintenance of buildings in conformity with the building Code of Australia and all other statutory requirements.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • Completion of recognised Building Surveying qualification (Level 1 or Level 2 Practitioner) or currently progressing towards obtaining Building Surveying qualification together with substantial industry experience.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of the Building Act and Regulations, Building Code of Australia, Residential Design Codes and all relevant legislation, regulations and standards.
  • Working knowledge of technical and administrative procedures relative to building control.
  • Ability to interpret and understand technical documentation and drawings.
  • Ability to interpret codes of practice and apply complex legislation.
  • Well-developed time management skills and the ability to set priorities.
  • Well-developed verbal/written communication skills, and sound computer/keyboard literacy skills.
  • Local Government experience (desirable).
  • Sound familiarity of the Shire district (desirable).
  • Holding a relevant trade qualification or construction industry experience (desirable).

Senior / Principal Building Surveyor

Full-Time, $110,000 - $120,000 per annum (plus entitlements, dependent on experience)

This role is responsible for ensuring that all buildings within the Shire are compliant with relevant Council policies, statutory requirements, and building codes for the protection of amenity for Shire residents. This role includes:

  • Ensuring building including plans and construction within the Shire complies with the building code of Australia, all other statutory requirements and Council policies for the maintenance of sound building practices in the Shire.
  • Seeking qualified third-party advice for large third-party commercial buildings.
  • Supervising day-to-day operations of the building services department.
  • Providing proactive assistance to builders, architects, engineers and developers, and consult with Shire staff and public authorities regarding the construction and maintenance of buildings in conformity with the building Code of Australia and all other statutory requirements.

To be successful in this role you will need:

  • 4+ years in the building industry as a building, building supervisor or similar, or 2+ years’ experience as a building surveyor, inspector, or supervisor with a local or public authority.
  • Developed interpersonal and communication skills, including conflict resolution, negotiation, public relations, public speaking, and writing reports, business letters and related correspondence.
  • Certification as a Municipal building surveyor issued by the department of Local Government WA or working towards.
  • Computer literacy skills, including Microsoft Office Suite and data entry processes.
  • Ability to work in a timely manner to achieve outcomes independently and as part of a team.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Building Code of Australia and other relevant legislation.
  • Knowledge of town planning legislation and practice, gathering evidence and court procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Shire’s organisation structure, function and relevant Council local laws and policies.
  • Current A class drivers license.
  • National Police Clearance (or willingness to obtain).
  • Current Builders Registration and Construction Safety Awareness Certificate (desirable).

The Shire’s district was first included as a part of the Plantagenet Wellington and Sussex Road Districts in 1871 and later in the Nelson Road Board District. The Warren Road District was formed on 3 July 1908 and changed to the Manjimup Road District in June 1925. With the enactment of the Local Government Act 1960, the Manjimup Road District name was changed to Shire of Manjimup on 1 July 1961. The Shire celebrated its Centenary in 2008 having provided over 100 years of service to the district.

There are a number of historical societies in the Shire of Manjimup. They collect, record, classify and preserve historic records and engage with the local community and visitors in interpretation of the area’s history.
