The Role

An exciting opportunity exists for high-performing consultants to deliver strategic consulting projects within Defence’s newly established internal consulting function.

As a Consultant within the Australian Defence Consulting (ADC) team, you will deliver market-quality work with a Defence DNA, combining the best private sector consulting skills with a passion and commitment for the mission of Defence. This is a unique opportunity to use your consulting skills for national outcomes free from the commercial goals of private consulting.

You will work within diverse integrated teams of ADC staff, other Australian Public Service employees and uniformed Defence personnel, delivering high quality work. You will be at the forefront of transforming how Defence delivers its work and the integration of leading private sector capability into the Public Sector.

Day to day you will work within a team delivering end-to-end high quality strategic consulting projects that meet client needs. You will apply structured problem solving techniques to policy and organisational challenges, facilitate workshops and interviews, analyse data and produce meaningful reports. You will be responsible for helping business areas across Defence to tackle critical challenges and deliver on key Government commitments.

As part of its core service offering, Australian Defence Consulting will undertake a range of process optimisation and re-design work. We are seeking experienced consultants to drive this offering. You will have the opportunity to specialise in, and lead, business process improvement projects, honing your skills and applying them to help Defence deliver more for Australia. While this will be your specialisation, you will have the opportunity to work across the diverse and exciting range of work we do.

You will have the opportunity to shape Defence’s approach to internal consulting, pioneering new methods and providing thought leadership and innovative ideas and solutions. As a member of ADC you will work to transfer skills and learning to the business areas in which you work, helping uplift capability across Defence to meet future needs.

This is a consulting role unlike any other. If you are a driven individual motivated by delivering impact, we offer a career path which combines the best opportunities consulting and Defence have to offer.

About our Team

The Australian Defence Consulting team has been established to deliver internal consulting services for the Department of Defence. The team is dedicated to delivering market quality consulting services and strengthening the APS-ADF workforce by building enduring capability across business areas. The team will be pivotal in enabling Defence to achieve the transformational change required to deliver the agenda outlined in the National Defence Strategy.

ADC is not here to just displace private consulting support and do work which otherwise would have gone to the market. It is here to uplift capability and reduce the use of, and reliance on, external consulting firms where it makes sense to do so. Much of this will be achieved not just by doing projects but by enabling areas of Defence to be self-sufficient by transferring leading consulting practices and knowledge to the APS and ADF workforce.

Our vision is for Australian Defence Consulting to combine the best of private sector consulting practices with Defence expertise and culture, driven by a commitment to the mission of Defence. It will focus where our unique capabilities can differentiate and add the most value for Defence. It will support the organisation to get ever better at using private consulting support, where it makes sense to do so, in the right way for the most value.

Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate will bring:

  • Expertise in business process improvement, with the ability to analyse current-state processes, identify inefficiencies, and design and map future state solutions.
  • Experience in business architecture and/or business analysis, ensuring alignment between process improvements and broader organisational strategies and goals.
  • Good facilitation skills, with the ability to engage stakeholders, run process workshops, and drive consensus on process improvements.
  • A structured and analytical approach to problem-solving, using data driven insights to inform decision-making.
  • A demonstrated commitment to sharing knowledge, expertise and developing capability.
  • The resilience to deliver results and manage expectations in ambiguous, high-pace work environments.
  • A passion and commitment for Defence’s mission and outcomes, with the integrity and professionalism to uphold APS and Defence Values and Behaviours.

Application Closing Date: Sunday 23 March 2025
