JOB PURPOSE
The Heritage Officer role preserves, promotes, and oversees the cultural and historical assets of our organisation. This role involves a combination of research, conservation, and community engagement to safeguard our heritage. The Heritage Officer will play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of our cultural legacy and ensuring its accessibility for current and future generations.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESULT AREAS
- Conduct field trips to facilitate the preservation and conservation of cultural artifacts, historic sites and other heritage assets.
- Establish and maintain relationships with communities, stakeholders and heritage organisations.
- Liaise with cultural committee on monitor/survey requirements of participants.
- Maintain and update databases and spreadsheets to capture and register historical and cultural significance of heritage assets and records.
- Oversee and manage responses for the general mailbox and triage email mailbox.
- Research and contribute to reports and correspondence to ensure compliance with heritage laws, regulations and to foster community awareness.
- Provide advice in relation to YGSHA and YPSHAS and Aboriginal heritage Act within YSRC policies and guidelines.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders and government agencies on conservation projects.
- Implement preventative measures and risk management strategies to safeguard heritage assets from environmental and human related risk.
- Foster community engagement and awareness of cultural heritage through educational programs, workshops and outreach activities.
- Work within and comply with all YSRC policies, procedures and established guidelines.
- Work collaboratively with all colleagues, teams and stakeholders throughout the course of work.
- Actively and positively contribute to the YSRC team culture.
- Follow all other reasonable management requests as directed.
QUALIFICATIONS, LICENCES AND EXPERIENCE
- Experience managing lands and heritage including working with proponents and stakeholders.
- Understanding of First Nations Peoples heritage and conservation values and protocols under legislation and tribal lore.
- Fieldwork experience working with heritage protection, cultural committees, land managers and communities.
- Strong written communication skills to prepare reports, briefing papers, correspondence, submissions and advice.
- Working knowledge on Aboriginal cultural heritage matters and ILUA’s (Land use agreements) including compliance, legislation and regulation.
- Experience in using georeferenced systems (GIS), surveys and record keeping.
- Able to manage compliance and enforcement duties on land and reserves.
- Experience conducting community awareness, engagement, and education programs to promote culture and heritage.
