ABOUT THE ORGANISATION

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated person to work for Narang Bir-rong Aboriginal Corporation (Narang Bir-rong). Narang Bir-rong provides Family Support Services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Families in Western Sydney, Nepean Blue Mountains, Northern Sydney/Eastern Sydney/Sydney and connected communities as well as Out of Home Care placements for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people who cannot remain at home due to abuse and/or neglect.

The role is full-time (35hrs), based at our Penrith office.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Family Researcher (Genealogist) is responsible for researching the family histories of children and young people in OOHC and developing genograms and family trees as part of their Cultural Care Plans. The role will work collaboratively with Cultural Connections Workers and Restoration and OOHC casework teams to research and document family history, ties and cultural connections with families and community. This role is responsible for connecting our children back to their family, country and communities. The role will include travelling within NSW, and interstate as required

NBAC PAY SCALES (ABOVE AWARD WAGE)

  • CW/S6 to CW/S14
  • Total Package Value: $92,806.10 - $117,898.51 (Package includes leave loading and Superannuation, and is dependent on experience)

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Aboriginality is a genuine qualification under the Anti-Discrimination Act.
  • Evidence of at least two COVID-19 Vaccinations.
  • Current Working With Children Check (WWCC) & National Police Check for employment purposes.
  • Valid NSW Drivers Licence (minimum P2)
  • Demonstrated family finding and ancestry research experience, including ability to source and retrieve identification documents in a timely manner (e.g. birth, death and marriage certificates) from a variety of external databases and systems (i.e. Births, Deaths and Marriages, NSW State Archives).
  • Demonstrated experience in preparing genograms and family trees.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and the ability to effectively engage with Aboriginal children, young people and their families. This includes knowledge of issues pertaining to the Stolen Generations and transgenerational trauma.
  • Experience or knowledge in child and family welfare, foster care or a related area and understanding of issues surrounding abuse and neglect of children, child protection and the impact of trauma.
  • Qualifications in community services, social work, psychology or relevant social science field.
  • Capacity to travel within NSW and interstate as required to connect with other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to provide cultural support and guidance to children and young people in care.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including developing and presenting plans and reports.
  • Excellent time management skills and the capacity to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and projects.
  • Experience in delivering training or relatable skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and relate to a range of professionals.
  • Demonstrated highly developed written and verbal skills.
  • Computer literacy skills.
  • Available for after-hour work.
