Kura Yerlo is a proud Aboriginal community-controlled organisation dedicated to supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through culturally safe and holistic services. We provide programs and initiatives that strengthen cultural identity, support family and community wellbeing, and empower future generations.

We are seeking a passionate and dedicated Cultural Family Engagement Officer to support Aboriginal families and children by providing culturally appropriate, individualised assistance. In this role, you will lead efforts to assist families in key areas such as transitioning children to school, linking them to services, and providing support through community workshops.

Your role will be instrumental in building trust and fostering meaningful connections with families and stakeholders. You will manage a diverse range of services and initiatives that help families navigate challenges while maintaining cultural safety and pride.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide culturally safe support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families in diverse service settings.
  • Support families and children with school transitions, including transport support and school engagement.
  • Facilitate community workshops in collaboration with key stakeholders.
  • Build strong relationships with families, children, and community members, ensuring their needs and voices are heard.
  • Assist with NDIS assessments and implement tailored strategies for family and community support.
  • Promote a positive image of Kura Yerlo and represent the organisation with professionalism.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to meet program objectives and deliver impactful results.
  • Uphold compliance with company policies and safety standards.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to engage with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • A commitment to providing culturally safe services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
  • Strong organisational and leadership skills with the ability to manage multiple responsibilities.
  • Experience or willingness to learn about NDIS assessments and processes.
  • A passion for supporting children and families in their journey through education and community engagement.

    Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:
  • Excellent verbal and written communication & interpersonal skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers.
  • Sound computer proficiency (MS Office – Word, Excel and Outlook), Customer relationship management systems and other systems introduced by Kura Yerlo. and other systems introduced by Kura Yerlo.
  • Must be able to work under pressure, while maintaining a positive attitude and providing exemplary support.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including the aptitude to provide accurate, timely and appropriate services to clients.
  • Ability to work independently and to carry out assignments to completion within parameters of instructions given, prescribed routines, and standard accepted practices.
  • An understanding of the impact that trauma has on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community and specifically children.
  • Willingness to learn or have knowledge and understanding of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
  • Ability to establish effective and professional working relationships with children, their families, external stakeholders and co-workers.
  • Ability to work independently and/or within a team environment to achieve program objectives.

    Cultural Family Engagement Officer Special Conditions:
  • Minimum Level Qualification, Certificate III in Children Services, Certificate III in Youth Work and or equivalent Community Services or Social Studies qualification or are actively working towards completion.
  • Current HLTAID011 Provide first aid certificate.
  • Current Responding to Risks of Harm, Abuse and Neglect - Education and Care (RRHAN-EC) certificate.
  • Current and valid South Australian Drivers (unrestricted)
  • Current NDIS Worker Check and National Criminal History Record Check (within 6 month) prior to and throughout employment, to be updated five yearly.
  • Identify as an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person
