About the role
Join us in a vital role that champions respectful communication and collaboration between the Council and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. As the First Nations Engagement Officer, you will support the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Council's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP). This position will involve working across various Council departments to ensure that the principles of reconciliation are integrated into the planning and execution of projects and initiatives, fostering stronger relationships and positive outcomes for First Nations peoples.
What You’ll Do
Enhance Community Connections:
- Foster respectful communication and relationships between the Council, the Barngarla Determination Aboriginal Corporation (BDAC), and local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
Support the Reconciliation Action Plan:
- Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Council's Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) to promote reconciliation efforts.
Coordinate RAP Working Party Meetings:
- Organise and facilitate meetings for the RAP Working Party, including agenda setting and minute preparation.
Build Cultural Capacity:
- Support initiatives that enhance cultural understanding and competency among Council staff, elected members, volunteers, and contractors.
Collaborate on Projects:
- Work alongside various Council teams to ensure the principles of reconciliation—respect, relationships, and opportunities—are integrated into all projects and initiatives.
Plan Celebratory Events:
- Assist in organising events and activities that recognise and celebrate significant dates for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, such as National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC Week.
What You’ll Bring
- Proven understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures.
- Demonstrated ability to build positive and effective working relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and other stakeholders.
- Effective communication skills in the resolution of minor matters.
- Ability to exercise discretion in the application of established practices and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to build rapport and relationships and negotiate mutually beneficial outcomes.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
