The Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS) was established in a critical act of self-determination over 50 years ago as part of the Aboriginal rights protest movement. We provide high-quality, culturally safe legal and support services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people throughout NSW and the ACT, and fight for social justice and equity for our communities.
Your Impact
As a valued member of the Criminal Law Practice, you’ll play a key role delivering high-quality legal services for Aboriginal clients, supporting strong practice and outcomes. You will undertake criminal appearance work across Local, Children’s and District Courts, preparing matters, advising clients, and instructing counsel. Each day, you will:
- Deliver culturally appropriate legal advice and representation.
- Appear in court across criminal matters, including travel as required.
- Prepare cases, conduct research, and brief/instruct counsel.
- Manage a busy caseload, files, and court schedules efficiently.
- Build strong client relationships and communicate with diverse needs.
- Maintain legal knowledge, uphold ethics, and support team collaboration.
Your Story & Strengths
You are a skilled and motivated Junior Criminal Solicitor with a strong commitment to delivering culturally appropriate legal services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients. You combine sound legal knowledge with empathy and professionalism, and are driven by justice and community impact, you build trusted relationships while advocating for fair and meaningful outcomes. Key strengths include:
- Relevant legal qualifications and current NSW Practising Certificate.
- Strong understanding of Aboriginal cultural and community needs.
- Ability to identify legal issues impacting disadvantaged clients.
- Sound knowledge of criminal law, practice, and procedure.
- Excellent communication, research, and time management skills.
- Ability to manage workload independently and travel as required.

The ALS is a proud Aboriginal community organisation.
We opened our doors in 1970 in Redfern as the first Aboriginal Legal Service in Australia – that makes us over 40 years old!
The ALS does legal work in Criminal law, children’s Care and Protection law and Family law.
We assist Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, women and children through representation in court, advice and information, and referral to further support services.
