About Us

Youth Legal Services are a part of Encompass Legal and Community Services (ELCS) which is a not‑for‑profit organisation providing vulnerable clients with legal and non-legal services specific to their needs.

This service offers free legal services for young people up to the age of twenty-five.

At ELCS we understand that legal and social matters can be complex and often require a combination of legal, social, and financial support. Our multidisciplinary team is made up of solicitors, tenant advocates, social workers, financial counsellors, older people's rights advocates, community legal education staff, program support staff and volunteers

About the role

The primary purpose of the role of Lawyer (Youth Legal Services) is to provide legal assistance services to young people under the age of twenty-five throughout Western Australia. This role is responsible for handling more complex criminal and civil cases. Additionally, you may contribute to our duty lawyer programs, education programs, engage in community outreach, mentor junior lawyers and participate in law reform and systemic advocacy efforts.

This is a fixed term full-time role for a 12-month period with strong potential for extensions.

Key Responsibilities

Providing comprehensive legal services, including advice, advocacy and representation, to your clients on a wide range of legal matters

Conducting client interviews, preparing case files, and managing client communication

Researching and analysing legal issues, and preparing legal documents and submissions

Appearing on court and representing clients in legal proceedings

Collaborating with other legal professionals and community stakeholders to ensure the best possible outcomes for clients

Participating in the development and delivery of community legal education programs

About you

3+ years post admission experience

Experience in appearing in criminal matters is highly desirable

Experience in legal service delivery including representation, casework and providing legal advice

Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build rapport with young people

Excellent research, analytical and problem-solving skills

Demonstrated organisational and time management skills with the ability to work under pressure
