Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced and detail oriented Laboratory Analyst to support our analytical laboratory in the testing and analysis of precious metals, copper alloys and electronic recycling materials.
The successful candidate should possess a strong background in Chemistry and Mathematics, with practical experience in analytical laboratory techniques. Candidates with experience operating Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and/or Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) instruments will be highly regarded.
Comprehensive on the job training will be provided for specialised analytical techniques, including Fire Assay.
Key Responsibilities
1) Prepare and process samples for laboratory analysis, including drying, grinding, weighing and acid digestion.
2) Perform chemical analysis using AAS , Fire Assay and other laboratory instruments.
3) Conduct wet chemical analysis in accordance with established laboratory procedures.
4) Perform analytical calculations and verify test results.
5) Record, compile and maintain accurate laboratory data and documentation.
6) Prepare chemical reagents, calibration standards and laboratory solutions.
7) Periodic chemical waste disposal according to company’s SOP
8) Carry out routine calibration, maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory equipment.
9) Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures and housekeeping standards.
10) Maintain inventory of laboratory chemicals, consumables and equipment.
11) Assist in improving laboratory procedures and maintaining quality standards.
12) Perform other laboratory duties as assigned by superiors
13) Plant site visitation for sample retrievals
14) Able to do team work and work with other departments
Working Environment
Work will be carried out in both air conditioned analytical laboratories and designated high temperature laboratory areas.
Fire Assay operations are performed in a high temperature environment. Candidates should be comfortable working under such conditions while using the required heat protection personal protective equipment (PPE) and following established safety procedures.
Commitment to laboratory safety and the proper handling of chemicals is essential.
Requirements
- Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Chemical Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science or a related discipline.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in an analytical, chemical, metallurgical, environmental or materials testing laboratory.
- Candidates who majored in Chemistry will be strongly preferred.
- Strong academic background in Chemistry and Mathematics.
- Solid understanding of chemical reactions, stoichiometry, analytical calculations, concentration calculations and dilution techniques.
- Practical experience with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and/or Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP) is highly preferred.
- Experience in wet chemistry, acid digestion and analytical laboratory techniques.
- Experience analysing precious metals, copper alloys, electronic scrap or industrial materials will be an added advantage.
- Strong analytical, problem solving and troubleshooting abilities.
- Meticulous with excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Good organisational, documentation and communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel , Powerpoint and Microsoft Office applications.
Preferred Attributes
1) Familiarity with the analysis of Gold (Au), Silver (Ag), Palladium (Pd), Platinum (Pt), Copper (Cu), Tin (Sn) and other industrial metals.
2) Knowledge of assay calculations, recovery calculations, dilution factors and statistical evaluation of analytical results.
3) Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP), laboratory safety requirements and quality management systems such as ISO/IEC 170
