Smith & Co is partnering with a well-established Queensland civil and earthmoving contractor to appoint an experienced Financial Controller to its Rockhampton operation.

Employing approximately 200–250 employees, around 200 pieces of plant and equipment and annual revenue of approximately $25–30 million, this is a substantial, asset-intensive business offering genuine autonomy and influence.

Reporting to the GM, you’ll take ownership of the finance function and commercial performance of the business. This is a hands-on role where you’ll be accountable for the numbers — what the business has earned, spent, forecast and the cash required to fund operations.

You’ll work closely with operations and senior leadership, providing accurate reporting and commercial insight while helping drive the organisation’s five-year business plan.

Key Responsibilities

• Own the day-to-day finance function and full month-end close, including accruals, WIP, revenue recognition and reconciliations
• Lead budgeting, rolling forecasts, cash flow management and financial performance analysis
• Provide meaningful variance analysis and challenge operational assumptions around costs, productivity, labour and plant utilisation
• Manage progress claims, variations, retentions and the cost-to-revenue position
• Maintain strong financial controls, governance and accurate management reporting
• Partner closely with operations, procurement and leadership to improve commercial performance
• Lead and develop the AP and AR team, including supplier payments and debtor management
• Support the GM Commercial and leadership team in delivering the five-year business plan

What You’ll Bring

• CA or CPA qualification – essential
• Minimum 5+ years’ relevant commercial or senior finance experience
• Experience in civil construction, earthmoving, equipment hire, mining services, infrastructure or a similar contracting environment highly regarded
• Strong understanding of month end, forecasting, cash flow, job costing, WIP, progress claims and variations
• Confidence partnering with and challenging operational teams on cost and performance
• Strong Excel skills and experience with job-costing or contracting ERP systems
