Safety Officer - Heavy Vehicle Transport
The opportunity
Ron Finemore Transport is a nationally recognised, family-owned transport and logistics business with approximately 950 employees, 313 prime movers and 570 trailers. The company operates a modern, company-owned fleet and is known for practical innovation, reliable service and a strong commitment to safety.
This is not a desk-based compliance role. Reporting to the Safety Manager, you will be visible across depots, yards and customer sites, working directly with drivers and operational leaders to identify risk, investigate incidents and improve the way work is performed.
The role will suit a practical safety professional who understands the realities of heavy vehicle operations and can build credibility quickly with frontline teams.
What you will do
Provide visible, day-to-day safety support across transport operations
Conduct depot, yard and customer-site inspections and identify practical risk controls
Support and conduct incident investigations, evidence gathering and corrective-action follow-up
Review driver logbooks and help monitor fatigue, scheduling and Chain of Responsibility risks
Support safe reversing, trailer coupling, loading and vehicle-interaction practices
Undertake drug and alcohol testing and driver welfare checks as required
Coach drivers, supervisors and operational teams through toolbox talks and one-on-one engagement
Assist injured workers with rehabilitation activities and medical appointments
Maintain accurate safety records, reports, registers and follow-up actions
Participate in occasional travel and on-call incident response requirements
What you will bring
Genuine experience in road transport, heavy vehicle logistics, fleet, workshop or comparable commercial operations
Practical knowledge of the Heavy Vehicle National Law and Chain of Responsibility - this is essential
WHS experience gained in a hands-on operational environment
Confidence engaging with drivers and operational teams in yards, depots and customer environments
Sound incident investigation capability; ICAM training or experience will be highly regarded
Strong communication and influencing skills, with the resilience to hold constructive safety conversations
An approachable, proactive style and the discipline to follow actions through
A Certificate IV or higher qualification in WHS or a related discipline is desirable, but operational credibility is equally important
The working environment
Predominantly onsite and operational, with regular frontline interaction
Standard hours generally aligned to transport operations, with some flexibility required
Occasional day travel, overnight travel and on-call incident response
A practical, down-to-earth and family-owned environment where ideas and improvement opportunities are heard.
A modern fleet and ongoing investment in safer systems, equipment and operational practices
How to apply
If you are a practical transport safety professional who prefers being in the operation rather than behind a desk, submit your CV and a brief cover letter outlining your heavy vehicle transport, HVNL and Chain of Responsibility experience.
