Learn Estimating From the Ground Up

Mr Pothole is a well-established, family-owned and run asphalt repair and maintenance business operating across the Perth metropolitan area. We specialise in pothole repair, asphalt repair and maintenance, and minor civil works to a wide customer base: residential, commercial, construction and local government.

We're looking for an Estimator who enjoys being out on the road, talking to customers, and solving practical problems. This isn't a desk-based estimating role pricing projects from construction plans - our estimating happens in the field.

You'll visit sites, meet customers, inspect the problem, measure the work, and work out the best practical solution. You'll then develop a scope and estimate that considers not just materials and waste, but how our crews will actually deliver the job - crew numbers, truck numbers, hours, and any traffic management or subcontractor engagement required.

You'll work directly alongside our Senior Estimator, who's been with the business for more than 20 years, and receive extensive practical training to build your estimating knowledge.

What You'll Actually Be Doing

You'll travel throughout the Perth metro area (Two Rocks to Mandurah) inspecting and quoting works including pothole repairs, asphalt patching, car park maintenance, asphalt re-sheeting and resurfacing, kerbing and minor concrete works.

On site, you'll:

• Meet customers and understand what they need solved.

• Inspect, measure and photograph proposed works.

• Consider different repair options and budget requirements.

• Identify site access and traffic management requirements.

• Identify opportunities to up-sell mechanical sweeping or other subcontracted works.

• Work out how the job would practically be completed.

• Prepare clear scopes and estimates using our estimating systems.

A good estimate at Mr Pothole doesn't just calculate square metres. You'll learn to work out: how many people are needed, how many hours it'll take, what trucks and equipment are required, whether any subcontractor works or hire equipment need factoring in, how the crew will access and prep the site, what traffic management is needed, how materials will arrive, and what has to happen before and after works are delivered. That's what makes an estimate genuinely useful to our Operations team and field crews.

You'll Learn From the People Who Do the Work

During onboarding, you'll spend real time working closely with our field crews - seeing jobs from arrival and site preparation through to asphalt install, clean-up and pack-up. We believe the best way to learn how to estimate our work is to understand how it's actually done.

You'll also work directly with our Senior Estimator, accompanying him on site inspections, reviewing scopes and estimates together, and gradually taking responsibility for your own customers and quotes as your experience grows.

Who We're Looking For

We're less interested in finding someone who already knows everything, and more interested in finding someone with the right attitude and way of thinking. You might already have some estimating experience, or you might come from construction, civil works, supervision, trades, field operations, customer service, or another practical, customer-facing environment and be looking for your next step.

You'll suit this role if you:

• enjoy solving practical problems

• genuinely like dealing with customers

• are comfortable spending much of your day on the road and visiting sites

• aren't afraid to ask questions

• enjoy learning from experienced people

• can communicate with everyone from field crews to project managers

• are organised and comfortable managing your own day

• take ownership rather than waiting to be told what to do

• are comfortable receiving feedback and learning from mistakes

• prefer seeing a job in the real world rather than sitting behind a desk looking at plans

Experience in asphalt, civil works or estimating is helpful, but attitude, practical thinking and customer service matter the most. You'll need a current Australian driver's licence, and a Construction Industry White Card (or be willing to obtain one before starting).

What We Offer:

• Competitive salary/hourly rate as above, commensurate with experience.

• Stable, full-time employment with a reputable family business.

• Company vehicle and tablet or laptop, for work-related use.

• Direct mentoring from a Senior Estimator with 20+ years in the business, and extensive field-based, on-the-job training.

• Full access to our estimating tools and systems.

• Supportive, family-owned working environment.

• Opportunity to grow into greater estimating responsibility over time.
