About the role
In this fast-paced role, you'll use your communications talent - writing media releases, opinion pieces, speeches, local stories, and making sure key messages cut through. Whether it's a national news moment or a local story from the electorate, you'll be helping shape how the MP connects with the public and the press. You'll need to be quick-thinking, a great communicator and understand the political environment. You will be comfortable working under pressure and confident in building and managing relationships with constituents, stakeholders, media and other MP offices.
Key responsibilities
Write and distribute media releases, statements, media packs, and opinion articles.
Prepare, develop and manage media events such as media conferences and joint media events, and brief the Member as required.
Develop content for electorate communications including regular electronic and postal mail.
Liaise with media (field requests, develop and manage relationships with journalists, producers etc), including Press Gallery and national contacts, Tasmanian media and regional media.
Proactively monitor news coverage and political content to identify and respond to emerging issues, media trends, and potential opportunities or risks.
Assist with creating and posting digital communications as required.
Organise events and meetings as required.
Other duties as required to support the Parliamentarian and the effective operation of the Electorate Office.
Promote, support and maintain a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.
About you
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with strong attention to detail.
Understanding of the Australian political landscape and media environment.
Ability to respectfully engage and communicate with a broad range of people.
Excellent organisational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritise and manage multiple and competing work tasks in a fast-paced working environment.
High levels of professionalism, confidentiality, and discretion.
A positive outlook and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
Demonstrated professional integrity and the ability to exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Obtain and maintain a Negative Vetting 2 security clearance and comply with the Ministerial Staff Code of Conduct.
Comply with obligations under the Behaviour Codes and Standards.
