Independent Chair - NRM Regions Australia (National Peak Body)

NRM Regions Australia is the national peak body representing Australia's regional natural resource management organisations. Bringing together regional expertise with national leadership, the organisation works across government, industry, research, First Nations organisations and communities to influence policy, strengthen regional capability and drive sustainable management of Australia's land, water and biodiversity.

The Board is seeking an outstanding Independent Chair to provide strategic leadership during an important period for the organisation and the sector. This appointment offers the opportunity to guide a respected national organisation as it continues to strengthen its influence, deepen partnerships and contribute to policy and system reform that supports environmental sustainability, climate resilience and thriving regional communities.

The Independent Chair will lead a high-performing Board, fostering constructive governance, strategic oversight and effective decision-making. Working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the Chair will ensure the Board remains focused on long-term strategy, organisational performance and the highest standards of governance while serving as an influential ambassador for the organisation nationally.

The successful candidate will be an accomplished board leader with demonstrated experience chairing, or serving in a senior governance role within, a complex organisation. They will possess exceptional judgement, political acumen and the ability to navigate environments characterised by multiple stakeholders, competing interests and evolving public policy.

Candidates will bring:

Significant governance leadership experience, including prior service as a Chair, Deputy Chair or Committee Chair.

A strong record of engaging effectively with government, industry and diverse stakeholder groups.

Deep strategic capability, financial literacy and experience overseeing organisational performance and risk.

Credibility within environmental, natural resource management, agriculture, public policy or related sectors.

The personal authority, independence and collaborative leadership style to build consensus, encourage constructive challenge and support effective governance.

An understanding of Australia's natural resource management system, environmental policy and regional governance environments will be highly regarded. To preserve the independence of the role, applicants must not currently hold a board, executive or other paid or voluntary position within a regional NRM organisation.

This is a remunerated appointment requiring an average commitment of approximately four days per month, including Board and committee meetings, stakeholder engagement and related governance activities. The appointment is for an initial two-year term, with the option of renewal by mutual agreement. While the role can be performed remotely from anywhere in Australia, regular travel to Canberra is required.

This appointment will appeal to an accomplished governance leader who is motivated by purpose, values thoughtful stewardship and wishes to contribute to outcomes of enduring national significance.
