Electronics Repair Technician — Agricultural & Machinery Electronics
AgElec Repair — Jindera, NSW (10 minutes from Albury) Full-time permanent | $80-100k depending on qualifications, experience and capability
The Work
Most electronics repair is board swaps. This isn't.
We repair the electronic and electrical hardware that keeps agricultural, construction and earthmoving machinery running — engine controllers, machine ECUs, monitors, sensor modules and control boards. Component level, on the bench, usually with no schematic and no factory support. Working out what a board is meant to do, and then why it isn't doing it, is the job.
A typical week might involve tracing a gate drive fault on a 1990s tractor engine controller, working out why an excavator ECU drops a cylinder once it warms up, or rebuilding a water-damaged sensor channel on a spray boom controller using the two working channels as your reference.
Sometimes there will be an established repair procedure.
Sometimes you will be the person who creates it.
When we get it right, a machine facing a $6,000 replacement controller — or an obsolete component that may no longer be readily available — can be returned to work for a fraction of the replacement cost.
Our customers are farmers, auto electricians, machinery dealers and mechanics throughout Australia.
When a critical machine is down, solving the problem matters.
Who We Are
AgElec Repair is a specialist agricultural and machinery electronics repair business based in Jindera, just outside Albury.
We provide mail-in, drop-off and on-site electronic repair services and operate alongside our sister business, Border Tuning, which specialises in diesel vehicle diagnostics, dyno tuning and mail-order tuning.
We are a small but growing technical business and we have more work than we can currently process.
We are looking for someone who can become an important technical part of what AgElec becomes next.
As the business grows, we want to move beyond solving individual faults. We want to document what we learn, develop repeatable repair procedures, identify common failures, build exchange and remanufactured solutions and, where the opportunity exists, develop improved replacement components.
For the right person, there is considerable scope to help build that capability.
Your Day-to-Day
Diagnosis and Fault Finding
You'll troubleshoot electronic components and PCB assemblies, safely test them and determine the underlying cause of failure.
Some faults will be straightforward. Others will require you to reverse engineer a controller, circuit or individual functional block to understand what it should be doing before you can establish why it isn't doing it.
You'll need to form theories, test them methodically and follow the evidence.
Component-Level Repair
You'll complete repairs across a wide variety of devices using appropriate soldering, rework, test and diagnostic techniques.
The work is varied. You won't spend every day repairing 100 identical boards.
Build the Knowledge Base
Every unusual repair teaches us something.
You'll document diagnoses, successful repairs, test procedures and recurring failures so that today's difficult repair can become tomorrow's established process.
We want the knowledge inside people's heads to gradually become part of the capability of the business.
Job Ownership
As your experience develops, you'll take responsibility for jobs from arrival through diagnosis, repair, testing and return to the customer.
That includes accurate job notes and keeping customers informed about progress.
Customer Support
You'll speak directly with customers by phone and email when additional information is required and, as your knowledge develops, help them understand faults, repairs and possible solutions.
Research
You'll source components and locate technical documentation, service information, datasheets and other information required to solve unusual problems.
And occasionally you'll disappear down an internet rabbit hole looking for a document nobody appears to have seen since 1997.
The Workshop
Our facility has a dedicated electronics lab, workshop and office. You'll have proper equipment to work with — digital storage oscilloscopes, hot air and soldering rework stations, stereo microscope, bench power supplies, programming and diagnostic hardware, and a full component inventory. The dyno cell is next door if you want to see where the other half of the business happens.
Plus snacks.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for someone with a strong electronics background who has had their hands on real components solving real problems.
You should be comfortable thinking about AC and DC theory, digital logic, processors and supporting circuitry and looking at a PCB and beginning to understand why it has been designed the way it has.
Most importantly, you need to enjoy problems where the answer isn't immediately available.
If your first instinct when confronted with an unfamiliar circuit is curiosity rather than frustration, we should probably talk.
Essential
Demonstrated experience working with electronics or electrical devices — professional, trade-qualified or serious hobbyist
Sound understanding of DC and AC fundamentals
Steady hand and genuine attention to detail with fine component work
Strong written and verbal communication — you'll be talking to customers directly
Intermediate computer skills, including effective use of business systems and web research
Current driver's license or reliable transport, and permanent work rights in Australia
Particularly Valuable
A degree in electronics or electrical engineering
A trade qualification in electronics repair or a closely related field
Experience in the agricultural, automotive electrical, or heavy machinery industries
SMD soldering and rework experience
An understanding of how components are applied and integrated on a PCBA to support fault finding
Personal projects, builds or repairs you're proud of
But we're deliberately keeping an open mind about background.
You might be an electronics engineer who wants to spend more time solving real hardware problems.
You might be an automotive electrician whose electronics knowledge goes well beyond normal vehicle diagnostics.
You might already work in another component-level electronics repair industry.
Or you might be the serious electronics enthusiast whose home workshop already looks suspiciously like ours.

The right person could grow with that.
That could mean becoming our senior electronics technician or engineer, taking greater ownership of the electronics workshop, developing repair systems, helping train future technicians and becoming involved in the development of exchange, remanufactured and eventually purpose-built replacement products.
This can be a job but for the right person, it could also become a career built around learning how things work, how they fail, how to repair them — and eventually how to make them better.
