Ranger
Department of Environment, Science and Innovation QLD
Posted 1 day ago
Are you an experienced field leader who enjoys working in semi-remote and remote landscapes, leading small teams and delivering practical conservation outcomes? This is an exciting opportunity to support the Ranger in Charge and help manage some of Central Queensland's unique national parks, conservation parks and State forests.
As the second-in-charge of the Clermont Work Unit, you will help plan, coordinate and deliver annual work programs while providing leadership, guidance and support to a small team of rangers. The work unit includes Epping Forest National Park (Scientific), Peak Range, Mazeppa, Nairana, Cudmore national Park and other protected areas and State forests throughout the Clermont-Belyando region.
This is a varied, hands-on role combining leadership, field operations and project delivery. You will contribute to fire, pest, visitor and asset management programs, threatened species conservation, natural and cultural resource management, compliance activities, and the maintenance of park infrastructure, equipment and assets. You will also work closely with Traditional Owners, neighbouring landholders, ontractors, volunteers and other government agencies.
No two days are the same. One day you may be supervising staff, planning projects or managing budgets and procurement processes; the next you may be coordinating fire management activities, conducting patrols, operating machinery or supporting emergency response operations.
Working across semi-remote and remote locations, the role requires someone who is adaptable, resourceful and able to think on their feet. Conditions can be challenging and you will need sound judgement, strong problem-solving skills and the confidence to make decisions in the field. The role involves regular travel, camping and periods nof working alone in isolated locations, sometimes for up to one or two weeks at a time.
What we're looking for:
You will ideally bring:
* Experience leading or supervising staff and fostering a positive team culture.
* Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
* Experience planning and delivering operational programs or projects.
* Knowledge of natural resource management, fire management, pest management, visitor management or related fields.
* Administrative skills, including report writing, record keeping, budgeting and procurement.
* Experience operating and maintaining plant and equipment, or the ability to quickly develop these skills.
* Confidence undertaking compliance and enforcement activities.
* A commitment to workplace health and safety.
* A willingness to support and promote the interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Requirements:
* Hold, or be willing to obtain, a manual driver's licence.
* Be willing and able to travel regularly, camp in varying conditions and undertake physically demanding field work.
* Relevant qualifications are not mandatory but will be highly regarded.
* Agricultural chemicals certification and/or a Queensland firearms licence would be advantageous.
Accommodation in Clermont may be negotiated.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys meaningful conservation work, values being part of a close-knit team and is equally comfortable leading others, working independently and tackling challenges in remote environments. If you are practical, resilient and motivated to make a real difference on the ground, we'd love to hear from you.
Applications to remain current for 12 months.
