A proper roads and structures job

If you're a Project Engineer who likes a job with a bit of everything, this one's worth a look.

New bridge. New highway alignment. Major earthworks, pavements and drainage. Throw in challenging floodplain ground conditions and there's plenty here to get stuck into.

This newly awarded Bruce Highway safety and resilience project is located near Townsville in North Queensland. You'll join during pre-construction, have a say in how the job is planned and then see your packages through on site.

The role is available as FIFO from Brisbane with flights ex-Brisbane and accomodation - or on a Townsville-based arrangement if you're already local. The package starts from $160,000 base + super, plus a project uplift for the FIFO roster and a completion bonus paid at practical completion

What you'll be building

The project includes:

  • Realignment of approximately 1.6 km of the Bruce Highway
  • Construction of a new floodway bridge
  • Piled abutments, piers and prestressed deck units
  • Reinforced concrete headstocks and approach slabs
  • Major embankment and formation earthworks
  • Pavement widening and rehabilitation
  • New culverts, drainage and flood-immunity upgrades
  • Wide-centre-line and property access improvements
  • Highway tie-ins, traffic staging and environmental works

It's a technically interesting site through low-lying floodplain, alluvial soils and groundwater-influenced terrain. There will be real constructability, staging and drainage issues to work through - not just paperwork for the sake of paperwork. Once finished, the upgrade will make this section of the Bruce Highway safer and help reduce the frequency and duration of closures caused by flooding.

What you'll own

Working with the Project Manager, Site Engineers, Supervisors and wider delivery team, you'll run your own packages from planning through to completion. Depending on your background, that could cover structures, earthworks, drainage or pavements. You'll be across:

  • Construction planning, methodologies, staging and look-ahead programs
  • Subcontractor, supplier and procurement coordination
  • Costs, forecasting, quantities, productivity and progress
  • RFIs, ITPs, lot records, hold points and QA documentation
  • Design coordination and resolving site issues before they affect the program
  • Variations, progress claims and commercial reporting
  • Safe delivery across live traffic and environmentally sensitive areas
  • Supporting Site Engineers and keeping the wider team moving

This isn't a role where you'll be boxed into one narrow scope. You'll have enough ownership to make decisions, solve problems and genuinely understand how the job is performing.

What we're looking for

You might already be working as a Project Engineer, or you could be a strong Site Engineer ready to step up. You'll ideally have:

  • A Civil Engineering degree
  • Australian site-based civil construction experience
  • Exposure to roads, bridges, structures, earthworks, pavements or drainage
  • A practical understanding of program, cost control, QA and subcontractor management
  • The confidence to take ownership and speak up when something needs sorting
  • Australian working rights and a current driver's licence

You don't need experience across every part of the scope. If you've picked up solid civil construction experience and can run a package end-to-end, we'd still like to hear from you.

Why this one is worth the move

You'll join early enough to influence the job, work across a genuine mix of roads and structures, and come away with a strong project behind you.

If Project Manager is where you're heading, the breadth and ownership on this job will help you get there. You'll also be working on something with a clear outcome for North Queensland - keeping a critical highway safer, more resilient and open for longer during flooding.

Apply through SEEK, or send your CV straight to [email protected]. We'll give you a plain rundown of the project, team, FIFO setup and where your background could fit. Let's have a straightforward conversation about whether it's the right move for you!
