Governance Officer - Local Government

Your new company

Are you curious about how local government really works behind the scenes?

Open to a broad range of candidate profiles (we'll consider up-and-coming or experienced people) this is a unique opportunity to step into a Governance role where you'll gain direct exposure to Councillors, committee decision-making, and the legislative processes that shape your local community. If you're interested in public sector operations, compliance, and local government politics, this role puts you right at the centre of it all.

Your new role

Reporting to the Executive Manager, Governance, you'll play a key role supporting the day-to-day governance functions of Council. This is a fast-paced, high-volume and process-driven role, where you'll be involved across a broad range of activities spanning governance, compliance and stakeholder engagement.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting Council and Committee meetings end-to-end - preparing agendas, reviewing reports, attending meetings and taking live minutes
  • Managing GIPA (Government Information Public Access) requests, including working through a wide range of community, compliance and information enquiries
  • Interpreting legislation, policies and governance frameworks to provide clear, practical advice
  • Working closely with Councillors, Executives and internal teams to support effective decision-making
  • Assisting with governance processes, policy implementation and continuous improvement initiatives

What you'll need to succeed

This role will suit someone who thrives in a structured, deadline-driven environment and has a genuine interest in
local government, governance or public sector work.

You'll bring:

  • Experience in administration, governance, compliance or customer-facing roles involving document review and decision-making
  • Strong writing skills, with the ability to produce clear reports, minutes or correspondence
  • The ability to interpret legislation or policy (or a strong interest in developing this capability)
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • A proactive attitude and resilience in a high-volume, reactive environment
  • Experience in local government, GIPA/FOI, or governance functions is advantageous but not essential.

What you'll get in return

  • Salary of $100,000 - $110,000 + Super
  • Flexible hybrid working (3 days in office)
  • Exposure to senior leadership, Councillors and real-time decision-making
  • A varied and engaging role across governance, compliance and community interaction
  • Ongoing career development within the public sector
  • Overtime or time-in-lieu for evening Council meetings
