About the role

The Ranger will undertake land, sea and cultural heritage management activities on traditional Land and Sea country under the supervision and guidance of the Senior Ranger.

The Rangers activities will be guided by a Working on Country Ranger Plan and Annual Scope of Works which will be developed in consultation with RNTBCs, communities and other relevant stakeholders.

The works will be implemented in accordance with the following Plans of Management applicable to your activities:

Land and Sea Management Strategy for the Torres Strait

Torres Strait Development Plan (Environmental Management Program)

Working on Country Ranger Plan

Indigenous Protected Area Plans of Management

Dugong and Turtle Management Plans.

What you'll be doing

Tasks will be varied and may include:

Conduct physical work outdoors within the cultural and natural resource management on the island of BADU and other communities with the Torres Straits. This including cultural site maintenance, traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) recording, cultural awareness activities, management of introduced plants and animals, threatened species management, land and sea patrols.

Consult, plan and seek advice from Senior Traditional Owners and Registered Native Title Bodies Corporates (RNTBCs) regarding work plan activities.

Computer literate to conduct administrational duties such as interpreting work plans, recording attendance and office duties.

Demonstrate capabilities to conduct maintenance on assets, equipment, and facilities.

Contribute to the Ranger team, work within a team.

Undertake tasks as per directed by the Ranger Project Management.

What we're looking for

TSRA Environmental Management Program are currently seeking dedicated Ranger to join our team on a temporary 12-month contract with a possibility of an extension.

Location in the Torres Strait

Boigu Island

Rangers combine traditional knowledge and western science to care of land, sea and culture in line with community and traditional owners.

Essential Requirements:

Applicant must be a current resident of Boigu Island or demonstrate the independent capacity to relocate and reside on Boigu.

Criminal history check will be undertaken by TSRA prior to appointment.

A ‘working with children’ Blue Card, or ability to obtain a ‘working with children’ Blue Card.
