About the role

The Mechanical Engineering Technician (Microtunnelling Operations) is responsible for the technical operation, installation, maintenance, testing and optimisation of specialised microtunnelling and guided boring equipment used in underground utility installation projects. Working alongside the drilling crew, this role ensures all mechanical systems, hydraulic equipment and plant operate safely, efficiently and within engineering specifications while contributing to the successful delivery of microtunnelling projects. The position combines hands-on mechanical engineering technical responsibilities with the operation of specialised boring equipment, requiring sound mechanical knowledge, fault-finding skills and practical experience with heavy machinery and hydraulic systems.

Key responsibilities

Assemble, install, commission and modify specialised microtunnelling equipment, hydraulic systems and associated mechanical components.

Conduct routine inspections, preventative maintenance and mechanical servicing of drilling rigs, boring systems, pumps, hydraulic equipment, cranes and ancillary plant.

Diagnose mechanical faults and identify equipment failures using technical knowledge and established maintenance procedures.

Monitor the performance of mechanical equipment and recommend improvements to maximise reliability, efficiency and productivity.

Perform testing of mechanical systems before, during and after project mobilisation to ensure equipment is operating within manufacturer specifications.

Coordinate repairs, replacement of worn components and scheduled servicing to minimise equipment downtime.

Maintain detailed maintenance records, inspection reports and equipment servicing documentation.

Mobilise, install and commission microtunnelling and guided boring equipment on project sites.

Operate Vermeer Axis Guided Boring System, AdaptX Boring Systems or equivalent specialised microtunnelling equipment.

Complete daily job reports, bore logs and production records.

About you

Trade qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Diesel Fitting, Mechanical Fitting or a related discipline, or at least three years' relevant full-time experience in a comparable mechanical engineering technician role.

Demonstrated experience maintaining and troubleshooting hydraulic, mechanical and heavy plant equipment.

Experience operating or supporting microtunnelling, trenchless technology, drilling or underground construction equipment is highly regarded.

Strong mechanical fault-finding and diagnostic skills.

Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, engineering drawings and equipment specifications.

Knowledge of preventative maintenance systems and asset management principles.

Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

Construction White Card.

Confined Space Entry, Working at Heights, and High Risk Work Licences where required.
