Laynhapuy Homelands Aboriginal Corporation (Laynha) is seeking a compassionate and community-focused Financial Counsellor / Financial Literacy Educator to join our Wellbeing Hub team.
This role is ideal for someone who is passionate about supporting individuals and families to improve their financial wellbeing, reduce financial stress, and build confidence in managing their finances. If you have experience in financial counselling, strong advocacy skills, and a commitment to culturally safe service delivery, we’d love to hear from you.
This role is ideally suited to someone who can be based on-site and become part of the local team and community. However, for the right candidate, we are open to discussing flexible arrangements, including a roster that alternates between working on-site and remotely.
About Us
Laynha is a not-for-profit organisation supporting 30 homeland communities across East Arnhem Land for more than 40 years. We deliver essential services including healthcare, aged care, housing, community services, and land and sea management.
About the Program
The Wellbeing Hub provides holistic support services to community members across East Arnhem Land, focusing on financial wellbeing, social support, and access to practical services. Through outreach, advocacy, and community engagement, the program works to strengthen individual and family wellbeing in culturally safe and meaningful ways.
About the Role
As the Financial Counsellor / Financial Literacy Educator, you will provide practical financial counselling, advocacy, and outreach support to individuals and families, with a strong focus on Yolŋu communities and Homelands. You will work closely with clients to improve financial wellbeing, reduce financial stress, and strengthen access to financial services and supports. A key part of this role is working alongside Yolŋu elders, leaders, and mentees to help co-design and strengthen a Yolŋu-specific financial education program that reflects local language, culture, priorities, and community ways of learning.
In this role, you will:
- Deliver one-on-one financial counselling for clients experiencing debt, budgeting, and financial planning challenges
- Advocate for community members with financial institutions, government agencies, and service providers
- Provide outreach services to remote Homelands and communities as required
- Support the co-design and delivery of culturally relevant financial education programs
- Maintain accurate client records, case notes, and reporting in line with program and compliance requirements
- Work collaboratively with Wellbeing Hub staff to support broader client wellbeing needs
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community organisations, financial institutions, and external service providers
- Stay informed on changes to legislation, financial systems, and policies affecting clients
- Represent Laynha in meetings, forums, and community engagement activities as required

Skills and Requirements
- Diploma of Financial Counselling or equivalent qualification
- Experience in financial counselling, advocacy, or community support services
- Sound knowledge of financial systems, debt management, welfare entitlements, and support services
- Experience working with Aboriginal communities, preferably Yolŋu communities
- Strong communication, advocacy, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to explain financial and legal matters in a way that is easy to understand
- Strong administration, record-keeping, and reporting skills
- Good computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
- Current Open Driver’s Licence
- NT Ochre Card and National Police Check (or ability to obtain)
- Willingness to travel to remote communities as required
