Do you love undertaking practical research that has a real impact to industry?
Bejo Australia is seeking a motivated Research Technician to join our Production Research team based in Richmond, Tasmania. As part of our Production Research team, you will help us develop and deliver pragmatic knowledge and techniques to our crop production team by maintaining trials to a high standard and testing new technologies in the field. Through this you will also support our global research efforts for the wider Bejo organisation.
Bejo Australia produces high-quality vegetable seed for our parent company, Bejo Zaden, a family-owned Dutch company and global leader in vegetable breeding, seed production, and seed sales. In Tasmania, we produce hybrid carrot, beet, brassica, and onion seed with a team of 55 employees across three locations.
Your Role
Working closely with both operational and research teams, you will maintain high quality trials, coordinate and undertake field activities, collect trial data and assessments, and take ownership of trial quality and consistency. You will work closely with our Researchers to ensure field trials are on track and extended effectively into production, and you will play a key role in driving trial excellence and testing new technologies in our cropping system.
Your key responsibilities will include:
Ensure all field trials are maintained to a high standard by coordinating and undertaking all practical tasks required to ensure their success.
Assist Researchers in the effective planning, design, and assessments of trials
Provide leadership and supervision to colleagues as required.
Work closely with stakeholders and colleagues to support effective extension of trial results to our local production teams and to Bejo’s global seed production research team.
Support crop production, seed processing, and apiary teams by undertaking operational tasks to a high standard when required.
Communicate and build strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.
Work both independently and within multiple teams.
To be considered you will need:
A relevant tertiary qualification, or equivalent, and demonstrated experience and understanding in applied research programs, horticultural and agronomic systems, and/or pollination systems.
Experience and qualifications operating farm machinery such as tractors, ATV, spray equipment and various implements.
Flexibility to work outside normal hours and the ability and willingness to travel locally and interstate.
Strong time management, problem solving, and communication skills.
Be self-motivated, have a high degree of initiative, and have a positive attitude.
Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident, have a current Australian driver’s license, a ChemCert license, and be proficient using a range of Microsoft office applications.
Selection criteria you will be evaluated against:
Experience working in the Agricultural industry or in applied research, and knowledge in agricultural or pollination systems.
Technical knowledge and practical experience with crop production, farm machinery, and agricultural technologies.
Demonstrable ability to communicate effectively and build positive relationships with all stakeholders.
Highly developed time management and project management skills with proven capacity to coordinate and conduct a large range of tasks across multiple projects.
Well-developed skills in self-leadership and self-discipline, while working effectively within a team and for the good of the team.
