Category Manager

NSW Government Organisation – Sydney Olympic Park/Parramatta, hybrid WFH (3 days in office) – ASAP start - initial asisgnment to 31/12/2026 – $792.95 per day (including super)

Key accountabilities

  • Contribute to the design and execution of sophisticated category management strategies that optimise value for money, strengthen commercial outcomes, and align with complex stakeholder requirements.
  • Analyse organisational demand, commercial risk profiles, and supply‑market conditions to inform strategic category planning and high‑impact sourcing decisions.
  • Lead end‑to‑end sourcing activities across diverse and high‑value categories, applying advanced commercial judgement to establish supply arrangements that deliver measurable business benefits.
  • Provide authoritative governance, strategic advice, and capability uplift to stakeholders to embed best‑practice procurement and strengthen organisational procurement maturity.
  • Develop and oversee comprehensive contract management plans, negotiate variations and commercial terms, and drive supplier performance and compliance through strong, outcome‑focused supplier relationships.
  • Plan and lead complex contract negotiations to secure value‑for‑money outcomes and ensure supply arrangements remain commercially robust and strategically aligned.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate procurement and category‑level risks to protect organisational interests and maximise commercial and operational opportunities.
  • Maintain rigorous documentation of procurement processes, decisions, and contractual arrangements to ensure transparency, probity, and full audit readiness.

Selection criteria:

  • Relevant tertiary-level qualifications
  • Proven experience in procurement, contract management or a related commercial discipline with 3+ years’ hands-on category management or sourcing experience
  • Strong knowledge of procurement policies, procedures, governance frameworks, and contemporary industry trends
  • Demonstrated capability in leading end‑to‑end category management and high‑value sourcing activities, including market analysis, commercial evaluation, negotiation, and supplier performance management to achieve value‑for‑money outcomes. Proven ability to influence, advise, and build capability across diverse stakeholder groups, providing authoritative guidance on procurement strategy, risk, and commercial decision‑making in a fast‑paced, high‑accountability environment.
  • Strong analytical, risk management, and documentation skills
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Preferable: NSW Government (or broader public sector) experience
  • Essential: Australian citizenship or PR, or New Zealand Citizenship is required for this role
