Position Description – Mission Systems Lead

We provide on demand, scheduled, and historical aerial data and analytics from sensors deployed to the stratosphere with persistent coverage, higher resolution, and increased value over traditional aerial and space imagery sources.

THE ROLE: MISSION SYSTEMS LEAD + LIVE FLIGHT OPERATIONS

This isn’t just another job; it’s a mission. As Mission Systems Lead, you’ll sit at the intersection of customer outcomes and real-world operations, shaping how missions are conceived, designed, and then flown.

You’ll lead customer-facing CONOPS development, translate applied scientific research into mission-ready designs (e.g., atmospheric sensing and ISR use cases), and build strong external partnerships (including universities). As we scale, you’ll also step into live mission support as a Flight Operator (Control Position) when missions are active. A basic understanding of aviation/flight operations will give you a great head start.

In the Flight Operator (CP) seat, you’ll support real-time flight operations for our high-altitude balloon systems monitoring vehicle health, navigation, and communications, executing standard procedures, and backing the Flight Director through every phase of flight. It’s hands-on, high-trust work that underpins safe, continuous operations and creates a clear pathway to Flight Director.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

§ Develop customer-facing Concept of Operations (CONOPS) across mission domains (e.g., Defence and Environment), including end-to-end operational designs and supporting assumptions.

§ Work directly with customers and partners to understand mission needs and translate requirements into executable mission concepts, constraints, and operational architectures.

§ Support mission design with inputs including trajectory analysis, wind analysis, and hazard awareness to strengthen feasibility, safety, and operational robustness.

§ Support proposal development by contributing technical narratives, mission trade-offs, and clear articulation of operational value and risk.

§ Lead and contribute to applied research initiatives (e.g., methane detection, atmospheric sensing, and ISR use cases) to mature mission capability and customer outcomes.

§ Translate scientific principles (e.g., weather, atmospheric dynamics, sensing physics) into mission-relevant insights, constraints, and performance expectations.

§ Produce clear, structured technical reports and briefings for internal and external stakeholders to support decision-making, credibility, and traceability.

§ Lead research relationships with universities and manage external partners, coordinating objectives, deliverables, and communications to support mission outcomes.

LIVE FLIGHT OPERATIONS (FLIGHT OPERATOR / CP) – WHEN MISSIONS ARE ACTIVE

· Monitor real-time telemetry, navigation data, and vehicle health.

· Execute standard operating procedures and checklists during flight.

· Support Flight Director decision-making with situational awareness and data analysis.

· Maintain accurate flight logs, pass-downs, and shift handovers.

· Monitor airspace boundaries and support regulatory compliance requirements.

· Assist with ascent, float, station-keeping, and termination operations.

· Coordinate with recovery teams as directed.

· Escalate anomalies or off-nominal conditions promptly.

· Support 24/7 operations including night and weekend shifts (as rostered).

· Participate in simulations and operational readiness activities.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE TEAM

This role is ideal for a technically credible, customer-facing leader who can develop CONOPS, guide applied research into mission capability and manage external collaborations with universities and partners, while communicating clearly with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

For you to be successful you’ll also need:

§ Experience developing Concept of Operations (CONOPS), mission plans, or operational designs in aerospace, aviation, defence, environmental monitoring, or similarly complex domains.

§ Strong ability to translate scientific principles (e.g., weather, atmospheric dynamics, sensing physics) into mission-relevant insights, constraints, and performance expectations.

§ Demonstrated customer and partner engagement skills, including eliciting requirements, leading workshops, and converting needs into clear operational concepts and technical narratives.

§ Proven capability to lead or contribute to applied research (e.g., atmospheric sensing, methane detection, ISR) and produce clear, structured technical reports for diverse stakeholders.

§ Ability to manage and coordinate external relationships (including universities), aligning objectives and deliverables, and maintaining productive, outcomes-focused partnerships.

Experience in regulated, security-conscious, defence, aerospace, or advanced technology environments is highly regarded. Familiarity with remote sensing, atmospheric science, mission analysis, or ISR concepts is desirable, but strong judgement, curiosity, and clear communication are essential.
